There's nothing quite like an anthemic piece of music to uplift and inspire. This new collection in ABC Classics' best-selling ENCORE series brings you a thrilling collection with everything from the opening juggernaut of a chorus from Carmina Burana to the awe-inspiring conclusion of Beethoven's Ode to Joy. There's a clutch of John Williams - Superman, Star Wars and much more; that great moment from Chariots of Fire where the choir rings out with Jerusalem ("bring me my chariot of fire..."). More English anthems come from Elgar (Land of Hope and Glory) and Handel (Zadok the Priest), and the famous Fron Welsh Male Choir make two rousing contributions. Official website In this 50th Anniversary year of West Side Story, some of the biggest classical crossover stars gather to record a brand new version of the musical. One of the most lauded musicals ever written, and one of the few that never age, West Side Story is still as relevant and well-loved today as it ever was. The cast in the seminal 1984 recording included Kiri Te Kanawa; here the part of Maria is passed to fellow Kiwi Hayley Westenra, who pairs up with Italian tenor Vittorio Grigolo as Tony. Hayley and Vittorio have exceeded 2.5 million International album sales between them! This is one of the only major recordings of this masterpiece to have been made since the 1984 version with Bernstein himself conducting, and has been made with the full authorization of the Bernstein Foundation in New York. A short essay, An Introduction to West Side Story, is included in the booklet. This has been written by Jamie Bernstein, a writer and broadcaster, and Leonard Bernstein's son. The international release coincides with the 50th Anniversary of the first Broadway performance of West Side Story, at the Winter Garden Theatre in New York on September 26th 1957. With a bright young cast and these timeless tunes, this is set to become the recording of choice for the 21st century West Side Story lover. Ovation will celebrate with a broadcast of the original film in October as part of the Bernstein month, and this new album will be advertised on Ovation TV from release for 3 months. |

Leonard Bernstein
TRACK LISTING BERNSTEIN: West Side Story To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the première of West Side Story,* Deutsche Grammophon has prepared this deluxe limited edition of its memorable 1984 recording of the musical under the baton of Bernstein himself, with Dame Kiri Te Kanawa and José Carreras in the leading roles, together with the DVD of 'The Making of West Side Story.' The latter uniquely documents the production's genesis, ups-and-downs, triumphs and tribulations. This is the first time both these discs have been released as a set. In the 104-page hardcover book accompanying the recording and film, original and new articles present both the history and a critical evaluation of Bernstein's masterpiece. For this special edition, Bernstein's daughter Nina has written an affectionate reminiscence of her part in the 1984 production, when she and brother Alexander took on the dialogue roles of Maria and Tony under the critical eye of their father. In addition, a new article charts the tempestuous evolution of the musical in the year of its première, largely through the words of Bernstein himself, in his famous West Side Story Log and in letters to his wife Felicia. This textual material is illustrated with photos from the original Broadway production, manuscript pages of some of the score's most famous numbers, and sessions photos from the 1984 recording. The evocative Dan Weiner photo, from which the new cover image derives, is also shown in its original context, as part of a delightful sequence taken of Bernstein with his wife in 1956. *19 August 1957, National Theater, Washington D.C.; 26 September 1957, Winter Garden Theater, New York

Juan Diego Flórez, tenor
TRACK LISTING BELLINI: Nel furor delle tempeste... per te di vana lacrime ( Il Pirata ) 'The King of the High Ds' celebrates the first superstar tenor with this disc of beautiful and thrilling arias by Rossini, Bellini and Donizetti. Juan Diego Flórez is the tenor for bel canto operas; the first choice for any new production at the world's great opera houses. Here he pays tribute to an extraordinary predecessor who inspired some of his greatest stage roles and became the first 'superstar tenor': Giovanni Battista Rubini. Like Flórez today, Rubini was loved as much for the touching pathos of his slow singing as for the thrilling power of his fast, high roulades. Roles the two singers have shared include the Prince in Rossini's La Cenerentola, Elvino in Bellini's La sonnambula, Arturo in Bellini's I puritani, Uberto in Rossini's La donna del lago and the title role of Rossini's Otello. Many of the arias by Rossini, Bellini and Donizetti on this new recording with the Orchestra of the Academy of Santa Cecilia, Rome under Roberto Abbado, are unknown gems which show the tremendous range of Flórez's vocal and dramatic art. |

The world's most popular opera singer's new recording, Maria, features 8 world premiere recordings, a duet with violin star Maxim Vengerov and a return for the singer to her bel canto roots. A musical of the highest Excalibur!
Opening in Melbourne this December! FROM BROADWAY AND THE WEST END COMES THE SMASH HIT MUSICAL, MONTY PYTHON'S SPAMALOT Monty Python's SPAMALOT, the smash hit Broadway and West End musical, will be coming to Her Majesty's Theatre Melbourne this November. Directed by Mike Nichols and "lovingly ripped-off" from the screenplay of the Pythons' best-loved film, Monty Python and the Holy Grail by Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones and Michael Palin, Spamalot has been leaving critics and audiences in stiches. Monty Python's SPAMALOT tells the legendary tale of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, and their quest for the Holy Grail and features a chorus line of dancing divas, serfs, cows, flatulent Frenchmen, killer rabbits and a legless knight. Directed by legendary Oscar and Tony Award winner Mike Nichols (Angels in America, The Graduate, The Birdcage), SPAMALOT was written by founding Python member Eric Idle. In addition to many new songs written by Idle and composer John Du Prez (A Fish Called Wanda, Monty Python and the Meaning of Life), fans will instantly recognize the songs from the Holy Grail film as well as the classic Python tune Always Look At The Bright Side Of Life. |
