This month's spotlight DVD: Birgit Nilsson sings Elektra at the Met.

Filmed live in 1980, this Metropolitan Opera production of Strauss's Elektra features James Levine conducting an all-star cast led by Leonie Rysanek and Birgit Nilsson.

This is one of Nilsson's signature roles and she is arguably the greatest Elektra of all time. Her enormous power and range ride over Strauss' orchestra with ease.

The cast also includes the magnificent Leonie Rysanek as Elektra's troubled sister and Donald McIntyre as Orest.

Bonus material includes Nilsson singing 'Isolde's Narrative and Curse' and a Swedish folksong, plus two radio interviews from different phases of the soprano's illustrious career.

'With Nilsson's intense, overwhelming singing. . . it was a triumph for her...Leonie Rysanek is one of the few sopranos who can almost match Miss Nilsson note for note. . . Levine's work was superb' The New York Times

www.deutschegrammophon.com/dvd

DG proudly presents the first full-length DVD documentary on the illustrious tenor Fritz Wunderlich.

In close cooperation with the Wunderlich family, Deutsche Grammophon is proud to bring you the first-ever full-length documentary on Fritz Wunderlich. This DVD is an unprecedented tribute featuring previously unreleased interviews, performance excerpts, and private films from the Wunderlich family archives.

Forty years after his tragic death on September 17, 1966, Wunderlich's family, friends and colleagues speak openly about the legendary tenor's life and legacy. The programme includes nearly an hour of previously unreleased footage along with extensive bonus material including notable performances (Die Zauberflöte, Eugene Onegin) and 15 never-before-seen interviews from the past two years.

This documentary spans the entirety of Wunderlich's life, from his childhood in Kusel to his accidental death just weeks before his scheduled Met debut. It shows the performer during his student years in Freiburg, his early engagements at the Stuttgart Opera, and his private stays on the farm of Wimmerhof during the Salzburg Festival.

This is Wunderlich as you have never seen him before. It is a moving story told through his eyes with footage from his own camera and through the voices of those who knew him best.

'Fritz Wunderlich is one of those singers whom I've never felt were historical. In his recordings he sounds so much of the present, so much of today that it's as though he were still among us.' Rolando Villazón

HANDEL: Giulio Cesare in Egitto

Peter Sellars's daring and novel adaptation of Handel's opera Giulio Cesare previously released on Laser Disc and VHS is now available on DVD!

Though sung in the original Italian, Giulio Cesare is relocated in the unspecified future in the Middle East. Cesare is the unquestioned leader of a major world power who visits the Empire's number one global trouble spot. The story unfolds in a major international hotel still under construction but already victim of terrorist bombs. Ptolemy is a 14-year-old 'self styled local potentate' and Cleopatra his beautiful and spoiled elder sister.

Sellars's imaginative restaging of the opera proves to be still politically relevant today.

Included in this DVD are the English subtitles supplied by director Peter Sellars himself, specifically created to match and enhance his personal vision of this opera.

Sellars's Giulio Cesare is performed uncut. The result is an extravaganza more than four hours long!

Peter Sellars is one of the leading theatre, opera, and television directors in the world today, having directed more than one hundred productions, large and small, across America and internationally. His contemporary visions of Mozart's operas Cosi fan tutte, Le nozze di Figaro, and Don Giovanni, are already available on DVD.

Countertenor Jeffrey Gall (Giulio Cesare), one of America's most prominent countertenors, leads a strong cast including the late Lorraine Hunt Lieberson (Sesto) who also appears on Peter Sellars's DVD of Mozart's Don Giovanni (as Donna Elvira). Also featured are baritone James Maddalena (Achilla) who first gained international recognition for his notable portrayal of Richard Nixon in the world premiere of John Adams's Nixon in China and Drew Minter (Tolomeo) internationally acclaimed for his performances and recordings of the music of Handel.

For its first release on DVD, Giulio Cesare features both a LPCM Stereo soundtrack and a new DTS 5.1 Surround soundtrack.
