The Salzburg Festival - often described as the greatest and most important festival in the world - presents performances of opera, plays and concerts of the highest artistic standards. On the occasion of the Mozart Year 2006, all of Mozart's 22 operas, singspiels, and scenic fragments are being staged between July 24 and August 31

In collaboration with Unitel, Deutsche Grammophon and Decca have taken up the challenge of recording all 22 works Mozart composed for the stage, making Mozart 22 a unique brand. Before the end of 2006, the 22 works performed in Salzburg 2006 will appear in a rapid-release scenario on DVD. Almost all works are in new productions, all with strong casts, and many new to the DVD catalogue (i.e. all DG titles except the Figaro)

Ivor Bolton conducts the 2006 Salzburg production of Mozart's exotic opera of sexual captivity

Mozart satisfied the popular fascination with the East with this lively and exotic setting of the story of a Western woman held in the Pasha's harem. His opera (written for Vienna in 1782) was a hit with the Emperor and the public and retains its place in the public affection today.

Stefan Herheim's Salzburg production brings together a superb international cast led by two Americans - coloratura soprano Laura Aikin and tenor Charles Castronovo, alongside the well-loved Bavarian Bass Franz Hawlata. Ivor Bolton conducts the orchestra of the Mozarteum, Salzburg.

The cast is led by the superb German Bass René Pape, who has made the role of the priest Sorastro his own, and the remarkable coloratura soprano Diana Damrau, who brings fire and accuracy to the vocal pyrotechnics of The Queen Of The Night.

Die Zauberflöte is without doubt one of the most sublime and remarkable operas of all time. Though not fully understood the opera is clearly influenced by masonic themes of brotherhood and the pursuit of knowledge and enlightenment.
