DG remembers Emil Gilels with three exceptional releases.

The Russian pianist Emil Gilels (1916 - 1985) would have been 90 on 26 October this year. He was one of the greats; to use an old-fashioned expression, he was the Real Thing. We are celebrating this anniversary in style, with the three releases detailed below.

Though left unfinished at this death, Gilels' Beethoven cycle is considered one of the most distinguished of our time. This great cycle, which is currently available as two multipacks in a slipcase (453 221-2), still has sales of nearly 1,500 sets per year after ten years on the market.

'One can listen to Gilels's Beethoven for hours on end without wishing a single passage to be differently phrased or moulded.' Sunday Times

'He was in many ways an ideal Beethoven pianist' Ovation

'As it is, we simply have some of the best Beethoven recordings of recent times' Ovation

'...there is indeed something miraculous about a touch so precise, so rapid, and yet so distinctive; a sensibility which can shape, colour and chord the music with so much fine precision. In a word, Gillels's astounding technique has been used with an alchemist's skill, transmuted and purified to the ends of the greatest art. Always, Gilels's virtuosity leads one back to the music.' Gramophone

'My career has been my whole life, and I have always searched. Earlier, I searched for sonorities, perhaps sometimes for effect; I loved the technical, virtuoso things; perhaps I tried more to play with passion. Later I came to understand that music is related to the other arts, to poetry and painting - to that big word, philosophy. Now I seek for the time of the composer, the fortunate man who had the idea; and I hear polyphony, which is always the most important. It is like the Alpinist on the mountain: there are several roads to the top.' (Emil Gilels)

TRACK LISTING

J.S. BACH: St Matthew Passion (SUNG IN ENGLISH)

This much loved English language performance of Bach's great setting of the Passion of Christ makes a welcome return to the Decca catalogue at a very special price.

Sir David Willcocks is a major figure in the English choral tradition, holding positions as organist and choral director at several English cathedrals before taking up the role of Director of Music at King's College Cambridge in 1957 - a role which he held with distinction until 1974, making many acclaimed recordings.

From 1960 until 1988 he was also Director of London's Bach Choir, giving definitive Easter performances of Bach's great Passion at London's Royal Festival Hall.

Outstanding vocal soloists on this recording include Welsh tenor Robert Tear as the Evangelist, Dame Felicity Lott as soprano soloist and the alto Alfreda Hodgson.
