TRACKLISTING With this month the 60th birthday of Britain's most successful choral composer Universal here put before a mass audience a magnificent exploration of John Rutter's Collegium catalogue. With the tracks selected by the great man himself this offers 22 recordings with 14 being from his sacred music repertoire. And wonderful they are too, ranging from the music Rutter put to St Francis of Assissi's timeless Lord, Make Me An Instrument Of Your Peace, his adaptation of an old Gaelic tune A Gaelic Blessing through to Sydney Carter and old spirituals. The Cambridge Singers do the bulk of the singing and are in fine voice. The secular music section works well too with the lovely Irish folk song I Know Where I'm Going a standout. If you're looking to explore the choral tradition, the 78 minutes of music here will be a revelation. |

ARTISTS TRACKLISTING The first and most exciting DECCA debut from an Australian since Joan Sutherland's more than 45 years ago! One of Amelia Farrugia's first prominent appearances was in The Australian Opera's 1997 season of Die Fledermaus. With a vivacity that emerged not only through her voice but in her exhilarating acting it was clear then that this was a personality to watch. Svelte and foxy, she strutted about the stage and through the opera's second act ball scene to the manner born, the voice glimmering and shining, top notes hit without the slightest trepidation. Since then, she has continued to grace operatic stages in Australia and abroad, the perfect coquette as Despina or Musetta or Adele. But therein lies a twist. For she can don the aristocratic robes of a Titania in Britten's Midsummer Night's Dream and bring to the role a gravitas that is at once proud and regal. Or reduce you to tears as Manon and indeed as a goodness-at-the-core Musetta in the fourth act of Bohème. So it is in her debut solo recording released on Decca, home of the great singers. Names like Flagstad and del Monaco from a bygone age, Pavarotti and Tebaldi from more recent times, and our own Joan Sutherland come to mind. In fact, not since 1959, when Sutherland made her Decca debut, has there been a recital disc on this label from an Australian. Now, 46 years later, it's Amelia's turn and in a way, the repertoire, though varying in its range, pays tribute to this great singer. The repertoire on this disc captures the essential supple rhythm in her voice and deportment - the qualities you could recognise even with your eyes shut. You experience that sheer vocal energy as she streaks, comet-like, to those high notes, exploding like firecrackers in the night sky in a group of French arias at the start of the disc. And then there's that beautifully floated B flat in Zeller's Schenkt man sich Rosen in Tirol and that glass-shattering high F at the climax of Voices of Spring (yes, the same note that strikes trepidation in the heart of many a Queen of the Night!) . Of course, any debut disc must display the varied portfolio of a singer. The disc closes with two items that represent the quieter, glowing aspects of her vocal persona. After some gorgeous Ivor Novello we have Australia's own Richard Mills. Pyrotechnics over we now move to a quiet place, firstly for a song especially for this debut recording ( Love's Coming ) as well as the haunting orchestration of Until We Meet Again (Irish Blessing Song). The latter is bound to become a classic, its sentiments and melody not dissimilar to such quiet uplifting songs like You'll Never Walk Alone. Add to these ingredients the integral roles of Alexander Briger as conductor who is so completely at one with the spirit of this music, and Tim Oldham as an extraordinary producer providing a wonderful soundstage for voice and orchestra and you have a recording that sparkles and glows and moves you in a unique way. It's a fiesta of colour, of joie de vivre - the joy of life - and a testament to Amelia's supreme artistry and indomitable spirit. ARTISTS TRACKLISTING The year 2006 will mark the 250th anniversary of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's birth, and Anne-Sophie Mutter will already be starting her celebration of the Mozart Year at the end of 2005. But, of course, in her own distinctive fashion: DG will be releasing her performances of all five Violin Concertos and, with Yuri Bashmet, the Sinfonia Concertante. Mutter is known for her all-embracing approach to the works of any composer she tackles. For Mozart this will mean all violin concertos played and conducted by one of the most celebrated soloists of our day, herself. This is a recording project that will attract critics as well as her vast audience. Buyers of Mutter CDs love to hear her in well-established works. Mainstream perception regards Mozart as the most 'classical' of all composers; connoisseurs will be fascinated by Mutter's approach and her achievement. |

Product Microsite: www.deutschegrammophon.com/alagna ARTISTS TRACKLISTING Roberto Alagna pays tribute to Luis Mariano with a fresh and virtuosic take on the highlights of popular repertoire. For his latest recording, opera megastar Roberto Alagna lends his luminous voice to the familiar hits of Luis Mariano, the most celebrated interpreter of chansons and operetta arias in the prosperous post-war years. Mariano was the first overwhelmingly popular performer of his time, whose radiant voice and charisma won him a mass following in the 1950s as well as the ongoing admiration of artists such as Alagna and Domingo. Almost all of Mariano's hits were composed by Francis Lopez; 2005 marks the 10th anniversary of Lopez's death. While deeply rooted in French culture, these melodies are well-known to a wide audience around the world, as Mariano used to tour extensively in the US and South America. Album highlights include 'México', 'C'est magnifique', and Cole Porter's 'I love Paris'. There is no one better to revive these beloved melodies than Roberto Alagna, who has been captivated by Mariano since the age of 10. Alagna used to perform this music in cabarets before establishing himself as an opera legend. With just the right timbre and expressiveness, Alagna taps the collective memory of a generation, breathing virtuosity and personal style into the most accessible songs of popular repertoire. With his expert direction of the Paris Symphony Orchestra, conductor-composer Yvan Cassar infuses the original character of the songs with a modern edge, a more swinging approach, and an occasional wink to gypsy jazz. Alagna is joined by a number of French stars such as Elie Semoun and Arielle Dombasle, who round out a 21st-century casting that freely echoes the France of the 1950s. |
