André Rieu
TRACK LISTING 1. Oh, what a beautiful morning A new chapter in André’s discography unfolds with his album You’ll Never Walk Alone. Coming on the back of nearly 2.5 million sales of his recordings in 2 years in Australia, this is an André Rieu “Songbook” – and the songs are those of hope and inspiration. While retaining everything about the sound of his recordings that his fans know and love, André ventures further, evoking the sound of great orchestras of the 1950s and 1960s. The program is music entirely new to his discography, and they include tracks requested by fans in Australia (two of these being the huge 1960s hit Elizabethan Serenade as well as Nearer, my God, to Thee) to songs from musicals – two from My Fair Lady and one from The Phantom of the Opera. There are classical favourites beloved by all – Beethoven’s tranquil Moonlight Sonata and Elgar’s Land of Hope and Glory. There’s a song that for a time acquired pop status, thanks to the efforts of Andrea Bocelli and Sarah Brightman – Time to say goodbye. And in a similar vein, André as composer in Yours Forever, a song he wrote for the victims of the recent Australian bushfires in Victoria. And then there’s the title track – a huge sporting song in the UK with no less currency in this market: You’ll Never Walk Alone. |

Yuja Wang, piano
TRACK LISTING CHOPIN: Piano Sonata No. 2 in B flat minor Op. 35 Gifted Chinese pianist Yuja Wang debuts on DG’s roster with an album featuring compositions by Chopin, Ligeti, Liszt, and Scriabin. Yuja Wang chooses pieces that, in her judgment, are refreshingly atypical of the customary musical perspectives of these composers. Exceptional artistry, technical perfection, and a rare ability to evoke an uncommonly vivid palette of rich colors from the instrument characterize Yuja Wang’s pianism. After blazing through Ravel’s Concerto for Left Hand, the Miami Herald wrote, “The evening’s spotlight belonged to Yuja Wang . . . [who] showed remarkable fire and iron-fingered power". |

Bernarda Fink, mezzo-soprano
TRACK LISTING Vivaldi: Sonata “Al Santo Sepolcro” (for strings) RV130
Rare recordings of two settings of Mary’s passionate Easter lament. For their second L’Oiseau Lyre disc, Il Giardino Armonico, again under their director Giovanni Antonini, are joined by celebrated mezzo-soprano Bernarda Fink, for a project exploring the Passion of Christ as seen through the eyes of the Virgin Mary. The two central works are both vocal settings of the Virgin’s lament. The first, Il Pianto di Maria, was long thought to be by Handel – a clear reflection of its outstanding musical quality. It was not until the 1990s that handwriting experts established it as the work of the little-known Venetian composer Giovanni Ferrandini. The other key vocal work will be the World Premiere recording of an aria by Francesco Conti – composer to the Habsburg court of Vienna - in which the martyr Lorenzo, threatened with being burnt alive, refuses to deny his Christian faith. This deeply touching aria features a rarely heard ancestor of the modern clarinet, frequently used in ‘pathetic’ arias of the period – the soprano chalumeau. Short instrumental pieces form a musical setting around these vocal jewels, and include music by Caldara, Marini, Pisendel, Weiss and Vivaldi. |
