14. Ebben?... Ne andrò lontana (from La Wally)
15. Yours forever
16. You’ll never walk alone

A new chapter in André’s discography unfolds with his album You’ll Never Walk Alone. Coming on the back of nearly 2.5 million sales of his recordings in 2 years in Australia, this is an André Rieu “Songbook” – and the songs are those of hope and inspiration.

While retaining everything about the sound of his recordings that his fans know and love, André ventures further, evoking the sound of great orchestras of the 1950s and 1960s.

The program is music entirely new to his discography, and they include tracks requested by fans in Australia (two of these being the huge 1960s hit Elizabethan Serenade as well as Nearer, my God, to Thee) to songs from musicals – two from My Fair Lady and one from The Phantom of the Opera.

There are classical favourites beloved by all – Beethoven’s tranquil Moonlight Sonata and Elgar’s Land of Hope and Glory.

There’s a song that for a time acquired pop status, thanks to the efforts of Andrea Bocelli and Sarah Brightman – Time to say goodbye. And in a similar vein, André as composer in Yours Forever, a song he wrote for the victims of the recent Australian bushfires in Victoria.

And then there’s the title track – a huge sporting song in the UK with no less currency in this market: You’ll Never Walk Alone.

Yuja Wang | LISZT; SCRIABIN: Sonatas & Etudes

ARTISTS

Yuja Wang, piano

TRACK LISTING

CHOPIN: Piano Sonata No. 2 in B flat minor Op. 35
LIGETI: Etude 4, Fanfares
SCRIABIN: Piano Sonata No. 2 in G sharp minor Op. 19
LIGETI: Etude 10, The Sorcerer's Apprentice
LISZT: Piano Sonata in B minor S 178

Gifted Chinese pianist Yuja Wang debuts on DG’s roster with an album featuring compositions by Chopin, Ligeti, Liszt, and Scriabin.

Yuja Wang chooses pieces that, in her judgment, are refreshingly atypical of the customary musical perspectives of these composers.

Exceptional artistry, technical perfection, and a rare ability to evoke an uncommonly vivid palette of rich colors from the instrument characterize Yuja Wang’s pianism.

After blazing through Ravel’s Concerto for Left Hand, the Miami Herald wrote, “The evening’s spotlight belonged to Yuja Wang . . . [who] showed remarkable fire and iron-fingered power".

IL GIARDINO ARMONICO | The Virgin's Lament

ARTISTS

Bernarda Fink, mezzo-soprano
Il Giardino Armonico
Giovanni Antonini

TRACK LISTING

Vivaldi: Sonata “Al Santo Sepolcro” (for strings) RV130
Ferrandini: “Il Pianto di Maria” [wrongly attributed to G.F. Handel (HWV 234)]
Marini: Passacalio (for strings and continuo)
Monteverdi: Pianto della Madonna sopra il Lamento d’Arianna
Vivaldi: Concerto “Madrigalesco” in D minor (for strings) RV129
Vivaldi: Sinfonia “Al Santo Sepolcro” in B minor (for strings) RV169
Conti: “Sento già mancar la vita”, aria from Il Martirio di S. Lorenzo (for mezzo soprano, chalumeau and strings)
Pisendel: Sonata in C minor (for strings and continuo)

Rare recordings of two settings of Mary’s passionate Easter lament.

For their second L’Oiseau Lyre disc, Il Giardino Armonico, again under their director Giovanni Antonini, are joined by celebrated mezzo-soprano Bernarda Fink, for a project exploring the Passion of Christ as seen through the eyes of the Virgin Mary.

The two central works are both vocal settings of the Virgin’s lament. The first, Il Pianto di Maria, was long thought to be by Handel – a clear reflection of its outstanding musical quality. It was not until the 1990s that handwriting experts established it as the work of the little-known Venetian composer Giovanni Ferrandini.

The other key vocal work will be the World Premiere recording of an aria by Francesco Conti – composer to the Habsburg court of Vienna - in which the martyr Lorenzo, threatened with being burnt alive, refuses to deny his Christian faith. This deeply touching aria features a rarely heard ancestor of the modern clarinet, frequently used in ‘pathetic’ arias of the period – the soprano chalumeau.

Short instrumental pieces form a musical setting around these vocal jewels, and include music by Caldara, Marini, Pisendel, Weiss and Vivaldi.

These sonatas are truly music to nourish the heart and soul. Beauty and elegance such as this is hard to surpass in these three beloved sonatas by JS Bach, one of the greatest composers of all time. The slow movement of the third sonata is famously known from the movie “Truly, Madly, Deeply”, starring Alan Rickman and Juliet Stevenson and makes audiences go weak at the knees. In this recording we are privileged to hear the mastery of Australia’s finest Baroque musicians, Danny Yeadon and Neal Peres da Costa. After thirty years of world-wide performance and recording, The Sixteen is recognised as one of the world’s greatest ensembles.  Comprising both choir and period instrument orchestra, The Sixteen's total commitment to the music it performs is its greatest distinction.  Its special reputation for performing early English polyphony, masterpieces of the Renaissance, bringing fresh insights into Baroque and early Classical music and a diversity of twentieth century music, is drawn from the passions of conductor and founder, Harry Christophers.

At home in the UK, The Sixteen are "The Voices of Classic FM", TV Media Partner with Sky Arts, and Associate Artists of Southbank Centre, London.  The group promotes an annual series at the Queen Elizabeth Hall as well as The Choral Pilgrimage, a tour of our finest cathedrals bringing music back to the buildings for which it was written.  The Sixteen has recently featured in the highly successful BBC Four television series, Sacred Music, presented by actor Simon Russell Beale and a second series is in the planning stages.

The Sixteen tours throughout Europe, Japan, Australia and the Americas and has given regular performances at major concert halls and festivals worldwide, including the Barbican Centre - London, Bridgewater Hall - Manchester, Concertgebouw - Amsterdam, Sydney Opera House, Tokyo Opera City and Vienna Musikverein and also at the BBC Proms, the festivals of Granada, Lucerne, Istanbul, Prague and Salzburg.

In addition, The Sixteen’s period orchestra has taken part in highly acclaimed semi-staged performances of Purcell’s Fairy Queen in Tel Aviv and London, a fully-staged production of Purcell’s King Arthur in Lisbon’s Belem Centre, followed by new productions of Monteverdi’s Il Ritorno d’Ulisse in Patria at Lisbon Opera House and The Coronation of Poppea at English National Opera.  Over ninety recordings reflect The Sixteen’s quality in a range of work spanning the music of five hundred years, winning many awards including Grand Prix du Disque, numerous Schallplattenkritik, the coveted Gramophone Award for Early Music, the prestigious Classical Brit Award in 2005 for Renaissance and most recently being nominated for a Grammy Award and two Classical Brits for IKON.  These latter two discs were recorded as part of the group's contract with Universal Classics and Jazz.

Since 2001 The Sixteen has been building its own record label, CORO, which now boasts nearly sixty releases.  Recent recordings include Brahms’s German Requiem, ‘Treasures of Tudor England’ (music by Parsons, Tye and White) which accompanied the 2008 Choral Pilgrimage, Fauré’s Requiem with the Academy of St Martin in the Fields and Handel’s celebrated oratorio, Messiah, with an all-star soloist line-up: Carolyn Sampson, Catherine Wyn-Rogers, Mark Padmore and Christopher Purves.

Bringing together live concerts and recording plans has allowed The Sixteen to develop a glittering catalogue of releases, containing music from the Renaissance and Baroque through to great works of our time.
