VARIOUS ARTISTS | J. STRAUSS: Der Zigeunerbaron
Series Microsite:
ARTISTS Siegfried Jerusalem | Sandor Barinkay Kurt Eichhorn
TRACK LISTING J. STRAUSS II: Der Zigeunerbaron Johann Strauss´s popular operetta with Siegfried Jerusalem and Ellen Shade in the lead roles. Johann Strauss was nearly 60 when he completed Der Zigeunerbaron, which became alongside Die Fledermaus his second masterpiece. The libretto of this Hungarian fairy story gave Strauss the chance to revel in such contrasting musical forms as the csardas and the Viennese waltz and the style of the lied forms and ensembles is so original and finely balanced that Der Zigeunerbaron can truly be called a comic opera. Among the leading names of the stellar cast are Wolfgang Brendel, Ivan Rebroff, Janet Perry, Ellen Shade and Siegfried Jerusalem as Sandor Barinkay and Kurt Eichhorn conducts the Radio-Sinfonieorchester Stuttgart. Director Artur Maria Rabenalt uses for this film version of Der Zigeunerbaron – filmed in Yugoslavia in 1975 - a specific media-compatible stylistics and method of telling. ‘Director Artur Maria Rabenalt . . . has engaged lovely voices and good actors, got a slimmed-down Ivan Rebroff to sing and play the handsome Prince Zsupan, set the scene in a picturesque landscape and has certainly given many people great pleasure with this new production.’ Berliner Morgenpost |

VARIOUS ARTISTS | J. STRAUSS: Wiener Blut
Series Microsite:
ARTISTS Ingeborg Hallstein | Gräfin Zedlau Anton Paulik
TRACK LISTING J. STRAUSS II: Weiner Blut Distinguished stars in a popular operetta: René Kollo and Ingeborg Hallstein in ‘Wiener Blut’ by Johann Strauss Jr. This operetta which plays in 1815, with everyone in Vienna for the Congress, is the story of Count Zedlau (René Kollo), Viennese ambassador, who is trying to balance his amorous liaisons. In this film-production by Hugo Wiener and Hermann Lanske from 1971, Anton Paulik conducts the Symphonie-Orchester Kurt Graunke. René Kollo and Ingeborg Hallstein is a charming couple as count and countess who enthuses his audience due to the brilliance of their voices. ‘73 years after the premiere of Wiener Blut – one of the best-selling operettas – it was clear from Hugo Wiener’s television adaptation that Johann Strauss’s title of Waltz King is quite justified.’ Rheinische Post ‘Contrary to operetta tradition, everything was performed wonderfully naturally and one did not just delight in the beautiful voices but also in the acting of the vivacious Helga Papouscheck, the charming and spirited Dagmar Koller and the ur-Viennese Fritz Muliar.’ TV-Nachlese |
