Rossini's Stabat Mater

Thu 17 & Sat 19 May 8pm

Rossini's genius for melody is evident in his theatrical and heartfelt Stabat Mater, a meditation on the Virgin Mary's vigil at the foot of the Cross. Rossini interprets the text not as a lament but as a prayer radiating peace and hope. The Stabat Mater is the centrepiece of this exhilarating concert, but we couldn't let such renowned Rossini specialists go home without also performing a dazzling selection from his operas.

ROSSINI Selected Arias

"I love playing these big choral works - being surrounded by and bathed in the rich splendour of massed choirs and great soloists, combined with the magnificence of the symphony orchestra. And I love the music of Rossini - sometimes elegant, sometimes spirited, always sparkling. This will be an exciting gala evening."

Vittorio Grigolo is a name you'll be hearing a lot of. One of the most unbelievably talented tenors of his generation, he was born in Rome, and as a boy, sang with Pavarotti in a performance of Tosca , immediately winning the admiration of - which led to study with - the maestro. Deciding not to join Il Divo when he was invited to do so, he signed a contract with Universal and is on the way to becoming a shining star.
