ARTISTS TRACKLISTING To commemorate the death of Pope John Paul II, Deutsche Grammophon has reissued this from 1985, the European Year of Music. The celebration of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul in the Vatican Basilica was given a special musical dimension by Herbert von Karajan, who fulfilled a long-cherished wish to express his veneration of the Pope by conducting for him Mozart's 'Coronation' Mass. This was an exceptional event, a celebration of the liturgy closely combining prayer and art in an atmosphere of tranquil recollection. The Proper of the Mass was performed by the choir of the Sistine Chapel under its choirmaster, Domenico Bartolucci, who had composed - as for every papal celebration - the pieces belonging to the liturgy of the day. Along with these newly composed pieces, which are responsorial in form, there were antiphonally sung Greorgian melodies intended for the whole congregation. The Gregorian chant for the Introit and the Alleluia was taken from the Graduale Romanum. The verse of the Offertory, 'O Roma felix', came from the Hymn of the First Vespers of the Apostles Peter and Paul. That year these Gregorian melodies were performed by students of the Pontifical Institute of Sacred Music directed by their vice-president, Fr. Bonifacio Baroffio The five sections which constitute the Ordinary of the Mass - Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus and Agnus Dei - as set by Mozart, were conducted by Karajan. The church resounded with Mozart's 'Coronation' Mass - then as on this occasion - not as a musical adornment of the service, but rather organically integrated into and serving the celebration of the Mass. The novelty of this event in 1985 was not a source of distraction from the true essence of the ceremony in St. Peter's. Thus it was possible for all partaking in the celebration of the Mass to hear in their hearts an echo of the words (Rev. 19:9): 'This is the Lamb of God... Happy are those who are called to his supper.' |

ARTISTS TRACKLISTING Finally - here it is! Giuliano Carmignola's eagerly-anticipated debut album on DG! While there are some talented baroque violinists around, Carmignola is certainly the one who stands out. His performances have taken audiences in the US and all over Europe by storm, leading to ecstatic reviews hailing both his musical artistry and his impressive stage appearance. For his Archiv debut, Carmignola has chosen a set of violin concertos by the three foremost Italian violin composers of the Baroque era, Vivaldi, Locatelli and Tartini. ARTISTS TRACKLISTING The melodrama was a familiar genre in the mid- and late-19th centuries with composers setting dramatic poems to music, with the piano taking on the role of the musician and the 'singer' acting out the poetry. This newly-recorded collection in which the indefatigable Fischer-Dieskau dons the role of actor. |

ARTISTS TRACKLISTING Mikhail Pletnev is known for his dedication to the Russian repertoire. Given the general lack of appreciation of Tchaikovsky piano music, the fact that a musician of Pletnev's stature takes it seriously is significant. This CD is a live recording containing the rarely-played 18 pieces for solo piano op. 72 of Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky and as an encore Chopin's beautifully melancholic Nocturne No. 20 in C-sharp minor. Tchaikovsky wrote these 18 pieces - music of rich personality, charm and soul - in the last year of his life. Each piece carries a dedication, and each has more than a touch of Tchaikovsky's genius - a characteristic turn of phrase or modulation, and an expressive charge. From the opening Impromptu to the Cossack dance of the final piece, Mikhail Pletnev revels in the beauty and brilliance of these pieces. |

Joining forces with young Swiss recorder virtuoso Marcus Steger, Musica Antiqua Köln and Goebel show once again how vivid and sparkling Baroque music can sound if approached with stylistic flair and played with an irresistible joy. |

ARTISTS TRACKLISTING 'tango is the ultimate heavy metal' - Cristóbal Repetto As you will surely agree after listening to his album for the first time, it is fact that you either like Cristóbal Repetto's voice or you don't. Repetto sings like Repetto, and nobody sounds like him. According to the Uruguayan press, 'Cristóbal Repetto swallowed a gramophone'. No tango début in recent years has been as intriguing and as magical as Cristóbal Repetto by Cristóbal Repetto. His self-titled album consists of tangos composed and first recorded in the 1920s to the 1960s. 'Listening and listening: that's what my life has been all about so far. I grew up listening to music of every genre. From an early age, I was shown a vast musical landscape by my parents, popular music of Argentine and of the world. In my family's large record collection, there were albums by Mercedes Sosa,Tita Merello, Jorge Cafrune, Violeta Parra and Yupanqui. Later on, León Gieco, Fito and Spinetta arrived and, with them, my first songs. Then came the candombes, Caetano and my first bands. And eventually Corsini, Magaldi, the songstresses and 'Polaco' Goyeneche. Today it continues to be the music that gets me going.' |

ARTISTS TRACKLISTING It's clear from watching Badi perform that she has found a seamless style of expressing music and rhythm. On stage, she morphs into an inventive, multi-instrumental Shiva, alternating between the guitar and voice and percussion. With her first solo album in six years and her début on edge music, Badi is one of the most interesting and unusual of Brazilian guitarists, singers and songwriters of the new generation. Most of you will still remember Badi Assad from her successful 1998 album Chameleon which was released on Lee Ritenour's (who was also executive producer) label i.e. Music through Verve. Its single 'Waves' spent a considerable number of weeks in the Spanish pop charts. On Verde, she returns home to Brazil, fusing her cosmopolitan experience with her spiritual and musical roots. Her innovative interpretations of Brazilian songs, individual readings of works by artists as diverse as Björk and U2, plus her original compositions reflect Badi's vibrant and sensuous journey through life. |
