Ballet hybrids often eclipse the originals from which they are drawn and such is the case with the music on this disc. Including such popular pieces as the 'Can Can' from Orpheus in the Underworld and the 'Barcarolle' from The Tales of Hoffmann, there is possibly no better recording on the market than Solti's of Gaîté Parisienne, no recording which fizzes and explodes with such unstoppable energy! Just listen!

One could be forgiven for being surprised that sacred music does not account for a more substantial proportion of Vivaldi's life's work, especially in view of his having been ordained a priest. The music on this disc, however, presents the 'other' side of Vivaldi, which in recent years has been gaining increasing popularity thanks to the efforts of such singers as Andreas Scholl. Philips made a pioneering set of a range of Vivaldi's sacred music and from it is culled music on this disc - uplifting and energising.

Three wondrous Schumann piano works - none of these recordings currently available - are coupled on a single CD. Gulda's iridescent Fantasiestücke was issued in the early days of the CD. Haebler's beautifully-shaded account of Papillons receives its first release on CD (outside Japan, where it is also currently unavailable) and likewise Magaloff's Études symphoniques (only ever issued in France, and no longer available).

Two magnificent French symphonies coupled on one disc. The Bizet is a light-hearted early work and this delectable recording by Haitink and the Concertgebouw has too long been out of the catalogue. Its sentiments aren't that far removed from Jeux d'enfants (Children's Games) - an orchestration of selected pieces from the piano-duet suite of the same name.

Karajan's Mozart takes us back to a time when elegance and charm were at a premium. Here is a splendid 'lite' programme that conveys much of the magic that can be found in Mozart. Starting with the familiar Eine kleine Nachtmusik, it takes in three great full-scale Divertimenti (K. 287, 251, 247), and ends with the profound Adagio and Fugue. The strings of the Berlin Philharmonic provide a warm sensuous sound.

The release restores to the catalogue the three Divertimenti K. 136-138.
