Ashkenazy Conducts Shostakovich
Just months after Stalin’s death in 1953 Shostakovich’s Tenth Symphony had its Moscow premiere. A young Vladimir Ashkenazy was there. It was an event, he says, and an incredible success. Even today it’s regarded by many as Shostakovich’s finest symphony and Ashkenazy himself considers it ‘the most complete’ of the symphonies – powerful and complex.
