Diana Krall

TRACK LISTING

1 Where Or When
2 Too Marvelous For Words
3 I've Grown Accustomed To Your Face
4 The Boy From Ipanema

7 Este Seu Olhar
8 So Nice
9 Quiet Nights
10 Guess I'll Hang My Tears Out To Dry
11 How Can You Mend A Broken Heart
12 Everytime We Say Goodbye

Some music is intended to paint a romantic scene – a candlelit dinner, a walk along a moonlit beach. Quiet Nights – Diana Krall’s twelfth album – ain’t about that. Using Brazil as a musical point of reference, the award-winning pianist and singer is not suggesting a night out; she means to stay in.

From Krall’s refreshing version of “Where or When,” to an utterly soul-stilling rendition of “You’re My Thrill,” the ten songs on Quiet Nights are disarming in their intimacy. Even those already familiar with the breathy vocals and rhythmic lilt in Krall’s music – and now there are millions – will be taken aback by just how far the music pushes, unabashedly, into the realm of sweet surrender.

The third album in four years from song interpreter extraordinaire Madeleine Peyroux, Bare Bones is both an extension of the currents of 2004’s Careless Love and 2006’s Half the Perfect World and a bold step into previously unexplored psychological terrain. Produced, like its two predecessors, by Larry Klein, this fluid and enthralling new work, is Peyroux’s most personal yet, hardly surprising considering she had a hand in writing each of the 11 songs, marking the fulfillment of a lifelong dream.

When asked to describe the sound of Bare Bones, Peyroux pauses to consider the question for several moments.  “The lyrics and the sounds are both honest, so that they match each other. We’re really exploring the calm, relaxed attitude, because we tend to fall into a rhythmic pocket that is not exploited much in popular music. Everybody’s ahead of the beat, on top of the beat or trying to get to the next beat; everything is short and very repetitive; we’re just way slower than all that.”

Raul Malo | Lucky One

Raul Malo

4 Hello Again
5 Ready for My Lovin'
6 Crying for You
7 You Always Win
8 Lonely Hearts
9 One More Angel
10 Rosalie
11 Haunting Me
12 So Beautiful

Raul Malo’s Fantasy Records label debut album, Lucky One, finds him fully shedding his musical shackles. “I have been fighting my whole life against people who want to pigeonhole music. I feel like I’ve got no restrictions anymore.” Malo is known for his work as the frontman of the Grammy Award-winning, globally platinum- and gold-certified band the Mavericks. Following two albums of covers, Lucky One is Malo’s first album original material in seven years.

Malo has earned much critical respect over the years. USA Today applauded “a voice that seems to have no limits of range or versatility.” The New York Times said, “Malo has an exceptional voice, a burnished tenor that harks back to Roy Orbison and the great Cuban singer Beny Moré.” Rolling Stone added, “Raul Malo has a voice on par with the best of ‘em: Sinatra, George Jones and Orbison.” And The Wall Street Journal opined: “Malo’s superb voice is big and melodic with a natural vibrato. Exquisite.”

Malo wrote Lucky One over a two-year period at his Nashville home and was so happy with the results that several of his home demos appear as final versions on the CD. For the balance of the album, he once again enlisted Steve Berlin, best known for his work with Los Lobos and who worked on Malo’s 2001 Today album, as co-producer. “I trust Steve musically,” Malo says. “Art comes first with him. That’s the most important quality of all. Nothing gets in the way of that.”

Songs on Lucky One range from the upbeat “Moonlight Kisses,” to songs like “One More Angel” and “Rosalie,” which take on mortality and the loss of life. “Hello Again” is a deceptively upbeat, swinging tale of heartbreak, and the closing track “So Beautiful” is an ultimately uplifting benediction influenced by events in and outside Malo’s home.

Soul deep Brit James Hunter - who possesses a "tight, slithery soul groove" and a "sweet growl" (NY Times), is making his way to Australia this April to perform at the Bluesfest and Sydney’s The Vanguard. To celebrate his arrival, we are releasing a very special tour edition of ‘The Hard Way’. Tour edition includes the current cd and comes with a bonus DVD of 5 live performances including ‘Carina’, and ‘The Hard Way’.

Hunter is an Essex born retro/pop/soul artist with an extraordinary soul voice. Think Sam Cooke, think Jackie Wilson and Hunter is your modern day equivalent. The Hard Way is his 2nd album release, but his first under the Hear Music/Concord label. His previous album “People Are Gonna Talk’ was released in 2006 by Rounder Records and was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Traditional Blues Album.

Hunter has been a musician for the last 20 years touring with his own band as well as back up singing for the likes of Van Morrison in the 90s. Since his first album release Hunter and his band have toured extensively from hole-in-wall clubs to the Hollywood Bowl; they have headlined in small venues and supported the likes of Aretha Franklin, Los Lonely Boys, Box Scaggs and Van Morrison.

With his arrival in Australia in April, and the tour edition release of The Hard Way, Hunter is one to watch in as Australians are exposed to a truly remarkable artist.

'The Hard Way' was produced by Liam Watson (The White Stripes) at famed analogue haven Toe Rag Studios in London. The instrumental palette is rich and the arrangements sharpened for 'The Hard Way.' Allen Toussaint joins Hunter on the sultry "Til The End," the rhumba "Believe Me Baby," and the title track. The gorgeous Echo Strings buoy "The Hard Way" and the romantic "Carina," with accompanying pedal steel. The jumping "Don't Do Me No Favors" is designed for the dance floor. This album is a joy to experience.
