'The Pianists' Pianist' plays essential Beethoven masterpieces.

Brazilian Nelson Freire is among the truly great living musicians. He continues to give live performances to rapturous critical acclaim - in solo recitals, concerto performances and in duo concerts with his friend and champion Martha Argerich.

Neslon Freire's recording of Brahms's two piano concertos was among the most acclaimed of 2006, garnering an enviable number of prestigious prizes: Diapason d'Or, Grand Prix de l'Academie Charles Cros, Choc du Monde de la Musique, 10 by Repertoire and Classica.

Freire follows that release with his fourth Decca solo album. After two albums of Chopin and one of Schumann this new disc of Beethoven sonatas features another composer who is central to Freire's career.

This album features three of Beethoven's best-loved piano sonatas - Les Adieux, the Waldstein and perhaps the most popular piano piece of all - the Moonlight sonata.

'Indisputably one of the greatest living pianists.' International Record Review

'If there is a more suave, pianistic and subtly-gifted artist before us today, I cannot imagine who it might be.' Opus Magazine

'David Garrett. Remember the name.' La Times

Yehudi Menuin's star student reached the pinnacle of the international classical world by the time he was a teenager. Violin studies continued in New York, this time with Itzhak Perlman while discovering his own creativity with composition. Then a triumphant 'Nokia Night Of The Proms' stadium tour transformed his musical vision.

Now David brings contemporary violin playing to a new level and shows what can be done with the instrument. The worlds of film, musicals, Metallica, core classical favourites and David's imagination come together as he composes, arranges and produces his debut album on Decca. 'This is the first album where I'm in charge. The producing, the arranging, the composing, it's totally my project.'

David came to Decca wanting to create an album going beyond classical boundaries and incorporating all his musical loves - R&B, pop, classical, and especially rock. He also wanted to stretch his composing muscles after graduating from Juilliard with a double degree in Violin (where he studied with Itzhak Perlman) and Composition.

The album features classic tracks from the worlds of film and musicals, an orchestrated Metallica track, three original tracks by David and of course classical favourites. The title 'Free' says it all!

Alfred Brendel's personal choice of previously unreleased live and BBC Radio recordings on 2CDs for the price of one.   These performances date from BBC studio recordings and concerts given between 1968 and 2001 and all broadcast by the BBC.

While Beethoven is a major element in this 2-CD set with a performance of the 'Diabelli' Variations, and Piano Sonata No.28; there are also selections from Mendelssohn and 2 of the rarely- heard Elegies by Busoni, and even more of a rarity (and a composer not usually associated with Brendel) Chopin's Andante spianato & Grande Polonaise in E flat.

On 5 January 2006 Alfred Brendel celebrated his 75th birthday and an association with Philips as an exclusive artist of over thirty-five years. To mark Alfred Brendel's 75th birthday four 2-CD sets were released of music by composers closely identified with him and under the overall title 'Artists' choice'. The selection of repertory and specific recordings were chosen by Alfred Brendel himself and this new set features the pianist's personal choice of live performances of a selection of works which he feels best convey his musical intentions.

'A perfectionist at the piano... master pianist Alfred Brendel.' The Sunday Times

'Brendel's playing is distinguished by its heightened intellectual and emotional intensity, by his ability to energize details while sustaining taut lines, by his infallible grasp of musical architecture and by his extraordinary empathy with composers.' Time Magazine

MIKHAIL PLETNEV | BEETHOVEN: Piano Concertos Nos. 1 & 3

Series Microsite:
www.deutschegrammophon.com/pletnev-beethoven

ARTISTS

Mikhail Pletnev, piano
Russian National Orchestra
Christian Gansch

TRACK LISTING

BEETHOVEN: Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 1 in C major, Op. 15
Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 3 in C minor, Op. 37

Mikhail Pletnev makes his mark on Beethoven's legacy with revolutionary new recordings of all Nine Symphonies and the Five Piano Concertos.

Mikhail Pletnev's Beethoven project is a large-scale recording venture that is unprecedented in his career - his first Beethoven Piano Concertos and Symphonies recordings. Pletnev recorded all Nine Symphonies with the Russian National Orchestra in a Moscow studio, while the five Piano Concertos were recorded live with the same orchestra over two days during the 2006 Beethoven Festival in Bonn. All of these musicians lived with and prepared this project in order to be able to record it in such a concentrated time span.

Pletnev is one of the truly unique and universal artists on DG: Like Beethoven himself, Pletnev is a pianist, a conductor, and a composer. The Beethoven project is very close to his heart: 'For me Beethoven is like a god. I worship him, and I admire his music. It always produces very deep emotions in me when I'm conducting it or playing it on the piano.'

The project - Pletnev's interpretation of a large part of Beethoven's oeuvre - reflects a very individual and special reading of Beethoven's music. Pletnev is famous for being a free yet sublime musician. He strongly believes in interpretative freedom and an artist's obligation not to deliver a 'mausoleum-like performance', but rather to make classical music come to life by using it to communicate his own emotions to the audience. As Pletnev puts it, 'It should go from heart to heart.'

The release scenario for Pletnev's Beethoven project is scheduled in three phases:
Piano Concertos nos. 1 & 3: March 2007
Piano Concertos nos. 2 & 4 plus all Symphonies in one box-set: September 2007
The recording of the Piano Concerto no. 5 is scheduled for release in the first quarter of 2008
