For her second Philips LP, Nina Simone entered the studio with an orchestra and an off-the-beaten-track repertoire that illuminated her pristine musicianship and emotional depth. On the full-of-highlights program Simone covers some lesser-known standards by Cole Porter and Rodgers and Hart and slow-drags "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood," which later was a hit for the Animals.

"As an artist, I must give myself wholly and completely to the expression of that which is within," said Nina Simone, who never sought the easy path. On her final recording for Philips, Simone selects diverse repertoire including songs by Chuck Berry ("Brown Eyed Handsome Man") and Duke Ellington ("The Gal from Joe's"), frames her soulful voice with lush orchestrations, and relates a string of personal and magnetic stories in song.

Nina Simone's third Philips release, I Put a Spell on You, explores the permutations of love, lust, and obsession. Propelled by a smoldering version of the Screamin' Jay Hawkins title track, a pair of bawdy blues ("Gimme Some," "Take Care of Business"), and sophisticated songs by French songwriters Charles Aznavour and Jacques Brel, this is one of Simone's best.

To really understand the 1960s, you had to hear Nina Simone. There's no better place to begin than with her first LP for Philips, Nina Simone in Concert, a 1964 recording on which the diva -- her moods dark and raw one moment, humorous the next -- channels the turbulent zeitgeist. The beyond-category program embraces jazz, folk, and pop and includes live renditions of her well-known hit "I Loves You, Porgy" and the stirring Civil Rights anthem "Mississippi Goddam."

Let It All Out, Nina Simone's fifth release for Philips is, among other things, a personal homage to immortal jazz singer Billie Holiday. Interpreting the lyrics with her usual individuality and passion, Simone reinvents such Holiday classics as "This Year's Kisses" and "Don't Explain." Simone also performs traditional blues, show tunes, and socially conscious folk numbers (Bob Dylan's "Ballad of Hollis Brown.")

Focusing on the blues more as a feeling than a form, Nina Simone finds points of intersection between the sacred and the secular on Pastel Blues , her fourth Philips LP. Utilizing a rich palette of moods and emotions Simone covers a broad range of songs: classics such as "Trouble in Mind" and "Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out," a piano-and-vocal version of "Strange Fruit," and the redemptive "Sinnerman" presented as an ascendant, gospelized chant.

Disarmingly and relentlessly intimate, Wild Is the Wind, Nina Simone's sixth Philips recording, comprises eleven tracks that together achieve a compelling consistency in mood, performance, and production. Sympathetic arrangements, restrained piano playing, and rich, closely miked vocals mark this stellar album, which includes Simone's searing original "Four Women."
