BEETHOVEN: Piano Concertos Nos. 1-5
Piano Sonatas - 'Moonlight'; 'Pathetique'; 'Tempest'

The first cycle of Beethoven's piano concertos to be recorded on period instruments is a wonderful bargain on 3 budget price CDs.

This cycle of Beethoven pianos concertos was first released in 1988 to mark the 15th anniversary of The Academy of Ancient Music. It was also the first recording of the Beethoven concertos to use period instruments and four different fortepianos are used for the cycle. This lively and fresh cycle was very enthusiastically received when first released and this reissue now includes the bonus of three popular solo sonatas Steven Lubin recorded in 1989.

The Nutcracker - Suite

Another superb release from Decca to celebrate the 70th birthday of the conductor Zubin Mehta.

Tchaikovsky's 4th, 5th and 6th symphonies are as popular on record as in the concert hall and many conductors have recorded these pieces. The first three symphonies in Tchaikovsky's cycle are less well-known and less frequently recorded. Zubin Mehta recorded this complete cycle in 1977 during his tenure as Music Director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra and the complete cycle appears on CD for the first time as an international release. Also included are some of Tchaikovsky's most popular orchestral pieces -- including the ever-popular 1812 Overture and the fantasy overture Romeo and Juliet.

The release of this set also coincides with the release of a 6-CD box set with a selection of recordings with Mehta and the Los Angeles, Israel Philharmonic, and Vienna Philharmonic Orchestras -- a set which charts Mehta's work with these orchestras while a Decca artist in the 1960s and 1970s and which is released to mark his 70th birthday on 29 April 2006.

RAVEL: Piano Concerto in G major
Piano Concerto in D major (for the left hand)

This collector's edition brings together all of Zoltán Kocsis's solo Debussy recordings made for Philips between 1983 and 1997; also included is Debussy's only work for piano and orchestra, the early Fantasie of 1889/90. Debussy's piano music represents one of the most important contributions to early twentieth century keyboard music and this collection contains all of Debussy's solo literature with the exception of the 12 Études. Also included are Ravel's two piano concertos - the only music by that composer Kocsis recorded for Philips.

These recordings of Debussy received very enthusiastic reviews when first released and the original CD comprising Images I & II and a selection of short pieces was the winner of the 1990 Gramophone Instrumental Award.
