The SBS Youth Orchestra is made up of young musicians from a range of multicultural backgrounds, reflecting Australia's ethnic diversity. Since its formation in 1988, the SBS Youth Orchestra has recorded many programmes for SBS television including the four in this DVD set. It's a tribute to the talent and adaptability of the orchestra's members under the baton of maestro, Matthew Krel, that they can perform the great classical works by one turn and then swing it with the best jazz 'musos' Australia has to offer in the next.
This collection of four programmes highlights that extraordinary ability as the SBS Orchestra sets about .... Jazzing it Up.
In ‘Fifty Years With Don Burrows’, Australian jazz legend, Don Burrows, teams up with orchestra to perform a specially written concerto by Australian composer, Julian Lee.
The program also includes a short documentary profiling Don Burrow's life and studies.
‘A Meeting In The Middle’ sees another Australian jazz legend, James Morrison, give the world première of composer Judy Bailey's "Four Reasons". Another work commissioned by the SBS Youth Orchestra
James Morrison then takes the spotlight in ‘Blowing His Own Trumpet’ performing his own compositions on flugelhorn, trombone, piano and trumpet, live in concert with the orchestra.
Finally, James and the orchestra pay tribute to the 250th birthday of the great Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart adapting some well-known Mozart repertoire as well as some common garden implements in ‘From Mozart to Morrison’.
