The SBS Youth Orchestra is made up of young musicians from a range of multicultural backgrounds, reflecting Australia's ethnic diversity. Since its formation in 1988, the SBS Youth Orchestra has recorded many programmes for SBS television including the four in this DVD set. It's a tribute to the talent and adaptability of the orchestra's members under the baton of maestro, Matthew Krel, that they can perform the great classical works by one turn and then swing it with the best jazz 'musos' Australia has to offer in the next.

This collection of four programmes highlights that extraordinary ability as the SBS Orchestra sets about .... Jazzing it Up.

In ‘Fifty Years With Don Burrows’, Australian jazz legend, Don Burrows, teams up with orchestra to perform a specially written concerto by Australian composer, Julian Lee.
The program also includes a short documentary profiling Don Burrow's life and studies.

‘A Meeting In The Middle’ sees another Australian jazz legend, James Morrison, give the world première of composer Judy Bailey's "Four Reasons". Another work commissioned by the SBS Youth Orchestra

James Morrison then takes the spotlight in ‘Blowing His Own Trumpet’ performing his own compositions on flugelhorn, trombone, piano and trumpet, live in concert with the orchestra.

Finally, James and the orchestra pay tribute to the 250th birthday of the great Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart adapting some well-known Mozart repertoire as well as some common garden implements in ‘From Mozart to Morrison’.

MONTEVERDI: L'Incoronazione di Poppea

The major debut on Decca DVD of Danielle de Niese. Returning to the opera house where she sang her sensational Cleopatra in Handel’s Giulio Cesare, Danielle performs the title role in Monteverdi’s great opera of lust and power, in Robert Carsen’s new, modern-dress staging.

De Niese is perfectly cast as the beautiful and seductive Poppea who ruthlessly grabs power as Nero’s lover but, in this production, is doomed from the moment of her coronation at the end of the opera. De Niese’s performance is vocally and dramatically powerful, perfectly complemented by Alice Coote as Nero.

The two are supported by an outstanding cast, together with period-performance stars Emmanuelle Haïm conducting the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment.

Carsen creates an intelligent and visually-strong production, focusing on the personal side of the story. At times the action is violent and shocking, but this is juxtaposed with episodes of lightness and humour.

Filmed in High Definition Widescreen.

“wonderfully lucid and unflinching staging... the wonder of conductor Emmanuelle Haïm's work here with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment is the way she illuminates the play of Monteverdi's expressive vocal lines with the harmony beneath.” The Independent, London

HUMPERDINCK: Hansel and Gretel

A brand new, striking production of one of the most popular of operas: the only modern version of Humperdinck's classic in the Universal DVD catalogue

The first Hansel and Gretel DVD on Decca: Laurent Pelly's striking new production of Humperdinck's enduringly popular masterpiece.

The performance comes from Glyndebourne, where the production premiered in 2008. The singing and ensemble from the Glyndebourne cast is outstanding and received excellent reviews.

Laurent Pelly updates the action to the modern day, with the family living in a cardboard box and the witch's gingerbread house represented as the sweets and chocolate aisle of a supermarket! This makes for a striking twist on the traditional children's story.

Filmed in High Definition with substantial bonus - a 38 minute documentary including interviews with the cast, conductor and director.

MINKUS: Don Quixote

Decca’s association with arguably the world’s greatest ballet company continues with their colourful production of the Petipa classic.

A breath-taking ensemble performance of Petipa’s popular Don Quichotte, loosely based on Cervantes famous novel, from the world-renowned Mariinsky Ballet.

The Mariinsky’s top principal male, Leonid Sarafanov (the Prince in Decca’s Mariinsky Nutcracker, released in 2007) gives another virtuosic yet elegant performance as Basilio in this lively and colourful production.

Filmed in High-Definition, this film was recorded during the company’s successful visit to Vienna in 2006 and is part of Decca’s continuing association with this awesome ballet company, joining Swan Lake and the Nutcracker which were released in 2007.

PUCCINI: La Rondine

Marta Domingo’s famous production of this increasingly popular ‘operetta’; the only version of this particular ending to the piece available on DVD

A valuable addition to Decca’s catalogue of Puccini DVDs. The piece is barely represented on DVD and Marta’s Domingo’s famous production is one of several recently which have started to make this work more a part of the standard operatic repertoire.

The operetta is famous for the beautiful aria ‘Doretta’s Dream’, used in the Merchant Ivory film of a Room with a View. However, the piece is in fact full of Puccini’s luscious melodies, albeit written in a lighter manner than usual.

Marta Domingo’s production was celebrated yet controversial for adapting the ending to reflect the more tragic outcome of the story; this is one of three endings Puccini wrote for the opera and Decca’s DVD will be the only available release of this version.

Excellent cast led by the beautiful Spanish soprano Ainhoa Arteta. American Marcus Haddock plays her suitor and the soprano Inva Mula is also notable in the role of Lisette.
