16 Frames
TRACK LISTING Close Range 16 Frames is the creation of frontman and songwriter Steve Sulikowski. Some bands function as democracies; others are shaped around a single-minded sensibility. L.A.-based 16 Frames is wholly the product of Sulikowski’s vision, and his talented bandmates—guitarist Josh Dunahoo, drummer Daniel James and bass player Dylan Wilson, the most recent addition to the lineup—are dedicated to the task of bringing that vision to life. The future is anything but static for 16 Frames with their music already featured on ‘Private Practice’, ‘The Hills’ and ‘Kyle XY’. 16 Frames also recently toured with Sheryl Crow, Crowded House and Pete Yorn. Their first single "Back Again" is available on iTunes now and "Where It Ends", their debut album Precisely 35 seconds into the opening track of 16 Frames’ debut album, the clouds part and a monumental chorus breaks through. “Then you wake up to the big change/To the breakup done at close range,” sings bandleader Steve Sulikowski, climbing upward through a dense forest of guitars to the top of his range. “And that love is such a cruel thing,” he continues, as he relives this heartbreaking moment, “What you want, you got/But you can’t hold on anymore.” At once intimate and overwhelming, it’s a breathtaking passage, one the listener isn’t prepared for, not only because it happens so quickly, but also because such transcendent moments are so uncommon in 21st century rock. |

Elizabeth Ziman (lead vocals, piano).
TRACK LISTING Momma's Boy
http://www.myspace.com/elizabethandthecatapult The title of Elizabeth and the Catapult's Verve Forecast debut album Taller Children reflects the unique blend of pop playfulness and grown-up introspection that defines Ziman's distinctive songwriting. Such memorable originals as "Rainiest Day of Summer," "Apathy," "The Hang Up" and "Hit the Wall" embody a vibrant mix of open-hearted wonder, whimsical humor and forthright emotional insight, merging classic pop melodicism with an array of acoustic textures, jazz twists and orchestral flourishes. The quality of the songs—including a memorable reading of the Leonard Cohen classic "Everybody Knows" —is matched by intimate, effortlessly soulful performances by the Brooklyn trio, which also includes guitarist Pete Lalish and drummer Danny Molad. Although the bulk of Taller Children was recorded with producer Mike Mogis (noted for his work with the likes of Bright Eyes, M. Ward and Rilo Kiley), several of the album's performances were drawn from the homespun demos that the band recorded in drummer Molad's home studio. The resulting album strikes a vital balance between lush sophistication (with such elements as Ziman's elegant string arrangements) and spare, unadorned simplicity. The qualities that make Taller Children such a refreshing surprise have already made Elizabeth and the Catapult a beloved favorite on New York's downtown club scene, where the threesome's winsome tunes and energetic, surprise-filled live shows have won them a large and devoted local fan base. Elizabeth's warmly personal songs reflect the diverse influences of her lifelong pursuit of music. She grew up in New York's Greenwich Village, just down the street from the Cafe Wha? and the Fat Black Pussycat, where her future heroes Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell got their start.

MELODY GARDOT | My One And Only Thrill
Melody Gardot
TRACK LISTING 1. Baby I’m A Fool
http://www.universalmusic.net.au/apr09/melodygardot_myoneandonlythrill_hi.html Amazing though it is, the story of how Melody Gardot overcame the effects of a near-fatal accident to become one of the vocal sensations of 2008 is not the most extraordinary thing about the 23-year-old Philadelphia singer-songwriter. It is simply that here is a voice in a million; one that touches the soul. Melody’s debut album ‘Worrisome Heart’ introduced, in The Sunday Times’ words: “a remarkable talent by any measure”, with songs of quiet, wistful poetry in arrangements that “ooze after-hours sophistication”. Yet the follow-up, for release in April 2009, marks a substantial leap forward. ‘My One And Only Thrill’ is an intensely creative milestone, transcending genre distinctions of jazz and blues to offer a haunting personal musical statement that will appeal to all music-lovers. As with her acclaimed live shows she captures and holds her audience in the palm of her hand. These eleven songs, covering a wide range of emotions, are all her own except for an irresistible, Brazilian take on Somewhere Over The Rainbow. It would take a heart of stone to remain unmoved by the poignant title track My One And Only Thrill. And when the album is finished (as Irving Berlin wrote truly) the song is over, but the Melody lingers on . . . |
