Staged and Design by Jean-Pierre Ponnelle Live from the Bavarian State Opera Munich, Sept 1985
TRACK LISTING HINDEMITH: Cardillac Wolfgang Sawallisch conducts Jean-Pierre Ponnelle's production of Cardillac. Live from the Bavarian State Opera, one of the 20th century's most gripping operas is seen in this unanimously acclaimed Munich production from 1985. The opera, staged by Jean-Pierre Ponnelle and conducted by Wolfgang Sawallisch, tells the story of the goldsmith Cardillac who is unable to part with his creations and recovers the objects he has sold by murdering the purchasers. A sensation at its 1926 premiere, Cardillac is based on E.T.A. Hoffmann's celebrated tale of an incomparable but obsessive goldsmith and a rash of mysterious murders in the Paris of Louis XIV. The stellar cast is led by Donald McIntyre - a bass full of character and personality. As a rare opera on stage, this release is a true collector's item. 'A triumph for Ponnelle and Sawallisch.' Kurier 'Total theatre... mixing Expressionism, bizarre whimsy and silent-film technique...McIntyre in the title role is both moving and terrifying.' Kurier In 5.1 DTS Surround Sound

Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra
TRACK LISTING MOZART: Symphony No.38 in D Major, K. 504 'Prager' Portrait of Rafael Kubelik - a first-time release on DVD. A comprehensive portrait of one of the 20th century's most brilliant and charismatic conductors - under-appreciated because of his reluctance to embrace the 'star' system - working with three great orchestras: Berlin Philharmonic, Concertgebouw and Vienna Philharmonic. Kubelik is also featured in a bonus biographical documentary, acclaimed for its 'stylish camera-work and a counterpoint of image, word and music reflecting Kubelik's spontaneity, exuberance and trust in emotion, and the ability, even in tailcoat, to retain his warmth and humanity.' Süddeutsche Zeitung 'Kubelik was one of those rare musicians whose human qualities were evident both in music making and outside. You could feel in the way he treated the musicians and in the way he behaved generally, what a generous and free human being he was.' Daniel Barenboim 'One of the best music films in years.' Süddeutsche Zeitung In 5.1 DTS Surround Sound - A first-time release on DVD Including bonus material: Rafael Kubelik - Scenes from a Musical Life + Anton Bruckner: Symphony No.4 - Rehearsal |

Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra Nikolaus Harnoncourt
TRACK LISTING MOZART: Le nozze di Figaro Salzburg's 2006 mega-event: a superlative Figaro on CD and DVD featuring Anna Netrebko. Anna Netrebko - 'the Russian-Austrian darling of the Salzburg Festival' Tagesspiegel - has once again triumphed at this year's festivities. With her 'unstinting and sensuous vocalism' (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung), Anna delivered a winning portrayal of Susanna in Claus Guth's new production of Le nozze di Figaro, which reopened the newly renovated Kleines Festspielhaus (now the House for Mozart) on July 26, 2006. Anna Netrebko was part of a cast that 'ensured musical splendour and radiance' ( Zeit online ) led by Nikolaus Harnoncourt with the Vienna Philharmonic. Critical acclaim for Anna's performance was rhapsodic: 'The Russian pearl with the servant's apron is part of the whole, flying along as if weightless, as light as a wisp of smoke, wholly individual,' reported Die Welt. 'As a character she is pure delight, her vocal style simply bowls you over.' 'Guth and Harnoncourt have opened up a new perspective on an opera that is normally staged as a lightweight, turbulent farce', wrote the Zeit online, while Die Welt described Harnoncourt as 'a sorcerer able to conjure up magical sounds.' Bloomberg echoed the positive accolades: 'This Marriage of Figaro should go down in history as departing director Peter Ruzicka's greatest Salzburg achievement . . . four hours of perfection.' To tie in with the Salzburg Festival 2007, the Figaro DVD - already released as part of the Mozart 22 box-set in 2006 - will be released individually in June. It also includes an extensive documentary offering great insights into the making of this historic production.

Metropolitan Opera Orchestra · James Levine Staged by Fabrizio Melano Video Director Brian Large Live from the MET , October 1983
TRACK LISTING BERLIOZ: Les Troyens Jessye Norman and Plácido Domingo star in Les Troyens. Filmed at the Metropolitan Opera in 1983, Berlioz's masterpiece Les Troyens is a tragic tale of love and fate based on Virgil's Aeneid. Under the baton of James Levine, Jessye Norman is stunning in the part of Cassandra and Plácido Domingo makes for a strong, compelling Aeneas. This benchmark performance was hailed by both critics and audiences and performed to greatest critical acclaim. Norman's role debut as Cassandra emerged as one her most significant and compelling performances, and this DVD is also a stand-out release among Domingo's extensive filmography. 'Jessye Norman commanded the stage...Tatiana Troyanos played her part with impressive dignity. She and Plácido Domingo spun out their great love duet in exquisite fashion...Levine's accompaniment caught the mood of sustained ecstasy and held it.' The New York Times 'A triumph.'
