ARTISTS Maria João Pires, piano
TRACK LISTING MOZART: Piano Sonata in F major K.332 A good portrait should stand the test of time, and these recordings by Maria João Pires will surely do that. This musical portrait is a tribute to one of the leading pianists of her generation and the repertoire for which she is best known. A child prodigy in her native Portugal, Maria João Pires achieved international recognition as winner of the 1970 Beethoven Bicentennial Competition and, coinciding with highly acclaimed debuts in London and New York, began recording for Deutsche Grammophon in the late 1980s.
The core of her repertoire consisted then, as it does today, of the Viennese Classics, in particular Mozart and Schubert, and the early Romantics, especially Chopin and Schumann. This exceptional 2-CD release is devoted to these four composers. 'Passionate', 'immaculate' and 'charming' are words used to characterize Maria João Pires's piano-playing: here is testimony to her unique art in recordings of solo works and concertos - one of which, the live recording of Mozart's Piano Concerto in A major K.488 from Salzburg, is being released for the first time. |

TRACK LISTING BEETHOVEN: 33 Variations On A Waltz by Anton Diabelli, Op. 120 BEETHOVEN: 12 Variations On A Russian Dance From Wranitsky's Ballet 'Das Waldmadchen' In A Major, Wo071
Celebrating Ashkenazy! Decca celebrates an iconic pianist and conductor and an unparalleled recording artist. For each of the last 10 years Vladimir Ashkenazy's Decca recordings have sold more than 1,000,000 units every year. Vladimir Ashkenazy's unique association with Decca, both as a pianist and conductor, has lasted an amazing 44 years (since 1963) - longer than any other living artist. His huge discography of more than 200 recordings has been enormously successful both artistically and commercially - his recordings of the complete Rachmaninov piano concertos (with the London Symphony Orchestra) have sold close to 1,000,000 copies. To mark this special year Decca will be releasing the only major piano work that Vladimir Ashkenazy has not previously recorded - the Diabelli Variations. Wiener Philharmoniker Nikolaus Harnoncourt
TRACK LISTING MOZART: Le nozze di Figaro Salzburg's 2006 mega-event: a superlative Figaro on CD and DVD featuring Anna Netrebko. Anna Netrebko - 'the Russian-Austrian darling of the Salzburg Festival' Tagesspiegel - has once again triumphed at this year's festivities. With her 'unstinting and sensuous vocalism' (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung), Anna delivered a winning portrayal of Susanna in Claus Guth's new production of Le nozze di Figaro , which reopened the newly renovated Kleines Festspielhaus (now the House for Mozart) on July 26, 2006. Anna Netrebko was part of a cast that 'ensured musical splendour and radiance' (Zeit online) led by Nikolaus Harnoncourt with the Wiener Philharmoniker. Critical acclaim for Anna's performance was rhapsodic: 'The Russian pearl with the servant's apron is part of the whole, flying along as if weightless, as light as a wisp of smoke, wholly individual,' reported Die Welt. 'As a character she is pure delight, her vocal style simply bowls you over.' 'Guth and Harnoncourt have opened up a new perspective on an opera that is normally staged as a lightweight, turbulent farce', wrote the Zeit online, while Die Welt described Harnoncourt as 'a sorcerer able to conjure up magical sounds.' Bloomberg echoed the positive accolades: 'This Marriage of Figaro should go down in history as departing director Peter Ruzicka's greatest Salzburg achievement . . . four hours of perfection.' Le nozze di Figaro audio recording was captured from various performances to highest artistic and sound quality standards. To tie in with the Salzburg Festival 2007, the Figaro DVD - already released as part of the Mozart 22 box-set in 2006 - will be released individually in June. It also includes an extensive documentary offering great insights into the making of this historic production. |

Emir Kusturica, director
TRACK LISTING Seven Old Icons Co-production with Le Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía, Valencia
This is the soundtrack to the punk opera version of the award-winning Emir Kusturica film Time of the Gypsies (1988). This release will coincide with world première performances at Opéra Bastille in June and July 2007, and later in Valencia. Emir Kusturica (b. 1954) was seen as one of the most creative directors in cinema during the 1980s and 1990s, and he has a big cult following. He was born in Sarajevo and has lived through turbulent war-ridden political times. He has won the prestigious Palme d'Or at Cannes twice and he is also a recipient of the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. The original movie soundtrack for Time of the Gypsies was composed by Goran Bregovic. The punk opera version has been adapted by Dejan Sparavalo, Nenad Jankovic, Stribor and Emir Kusturica. It is accompanied by The No Smoking Orchestra, a gypsy techno-rock band. The orchestra was established in Sarajevo in 1980. They were joined by Kusturica on bass in 1986. In 1998 they composed the music for Kusturica's film Black Cat, White Cat which won the Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival of that year. 'Kusturica does not have fans as much as followers, who turn out in their thousands all over the world to his concerts when he takes his Balkan 'punk' band, the No Smoking Orchestra, on the road.' The Guardian Time of the Gypsies tells the story of a young Roma man, Perhan. A gypsy teenager with telekenetic powers, he is lured by promises of wealth and a better life to leave his grandmother and girlfriend to join the criminal gang of Ahmed. The story charts Perhan's passage from Yugoslavian home village to the criminal underworld of Milan. |
