20 Welsh folksong (title to follow) [solo] 21 Welsh folksong (title to follow) [solo with harp] With nearly 30 items under his belt for Deutsche Grammophon, Bryn Terfel - the world's greatest bass-baritone and recent Grammy-award winner - is an obvious choice for inclusion in our classy Portrait of the Artist series. We supplied a framework, and Bryn filled out the details - it's his personal selection of his favourite tracks plus a couple of exclusive first-time release bonus tracks: the 11-year-old Bryn singing two charming Welsh folksongs. Here he is, in all his larger-than-life glory: the supreme purveyer of ballads and sacred songs, the lieder recitalist (in German and English), and the master of the operatic arts - whether from Mozart, Wagner, Verdi or Handel - and not forgetting Gilbert and Sullivan! Framed by two versions of Amazing Grace (the second of which is rare solo version with jazz guitarist Martin Taylor) , the double-CD set doesn't separate popular or classical music. The result reveals the man and singer in all his facets, and raises the question: How does he do it? How does he encompass so many styles so convincingly? At the end of the day, what emerges with unbelievable clarity is the sincerity of his approach to his art. |

ARTISTS Gabrieli Consort & Players
TRACK LISTING TALLIS: Miserere nostri With their compelling concept album The Road to Paradise, Paul McCreesh and the Gabrieli Consort take us on a medieval pilgrimage, a spiritual journey. A cappella choral music by English composers of the 16th is contrasted with works by 20th-century composers in this unique programme depicting the desire for spiritual enlightenment that was the driving force behind the medieval pilgrimage. In medieval times, making a pilgrimage to a holy place was the ambition of many Christians, for whom it was regarded as the symbolic enactment of a lifetime's journey to a sacred resting place, undertaken through considerable physical effort. The disc includes pieces by Byrd and Tallis, Britten and Holst among others, masterfully grouped to convey the sufferings of life, death, and a vision of the paradise beyond With the ongoing popularity of medieval a cappella singing and the increased interest in spirituality, The Road to Paradise is a disc with commercial, lifestyle-oriented appeal - it is both a treat for fans of choral and early music as well as appropriate for a broad audience in search of relaxing, spiritual music. |
