MOZART: Don Giovanni

This unique version of Mozart's great drama 'Don Giovanni' is one of the three opera DVD releases this month from Decca. Together they represent the three Mozart operas composed to texts by Lorenzo Da Ponte, presented here in contemporary stagings by the celebrated American director Peter Sellars.

Sung in the original Italian but relocated to contrasting worlds of late 20th century USA, 'Don Giovanni' takes place in the darker streets of brownstone New York.

The singer/actor ensemble with whom Peter Sellars worked on all three productions
delivers a special level of theatrical credibility and dramatic conviction -- not often
witnessed in the operatic theatre and essential for the persuasive presentation of these
adventurous contemporary settings.

For their first release on DVD, each opera now features both a LPCM Stereo
soundtrack and a new DTS 5.1 Surround soundtrack.
Also included are the English subtitles supplied by director Peter Sellars himself,
specifically created to match and enhance his personal vision of these popular operas.

All three operas are also available in a special box set (074 3087).

STRAVINSKY: Oedipus Rex

Jessye Norman, Bryn Terfel and Philip Langridge head a star cast in a stunning staging of Stravinsky's opera-oratorio. One of the most visually compelling stagings of any 20th century opera, Julie Taymor's amazing film of Stravinsky's opera-oratorio 'Oedipus Rex' won many awards, following its staging at the Saito Kinen Festival in Japan in 1992. Julie Taymor (designer and director of 'The Lion King') both directed the production and designed the costumes, basing the unique look of the production on early Japanese Haniwa and European Cycladic sculpture (3200-2200 BC), and assisted by a strking set design from George Tsypin and clay from Reiko Kruk.

With the great English tenor Philip Langridge in the ill-fated title role, an imperious Jessye Norman as Jocasta, and a young Bryn Terfel as Creon, this was an ideal cast, delivering powerful performances of Stravinsky's archaic drama of disease, corruption, murder, suicide and, finally, self-inflicted blinding. The speaking role is taken by the Japanese actor Min Tanaka, with an all-Japanese male chorus and dancer (as Oedipus's double). The polished Saito Kinen Orchestra was conducted by maestro Seiji Ozawa.

The DVD features optional subtitles in English, French, German, Spanish, Italian and Chinese. The two soundtracks are PCM stereo and 5.1 DTS Surround.

•  The DVD also features substantial bonus features:
•  Conversations with Julie Taymor (60 mins, featuring interviews with Jessye Norman, Seiji Ozawa and George Tsypin)
•  A Picture Gallery of 187 rehearsal and performance photos
•  Julie Taymor's Directors Note
•  DVD showreel (showcasing other DVD releases from Decca/Philips)

ALFANO: Cyrano de Bergerac

Cyrano de Bergerac with Alagna in the title role is a world première, Cyrano never having been released on DVD before. The opera was recorded during a performance at the Festival de Montpellier in 2003. Cyrano had not been staged in its original version since its première in 1936!

The French singer Roberto Alagna is one of the finest lyrical tenors of his generation. He regularly appears at the great opera houses worldwide, portraying the heroes of Puccini, Donizetti, Verdi, Gounod, Massenet and Bizet, among others. He has received remarkable critical acclaim throughout his whole career.

Roberto Alagna is undoubtedly the star of this production, specially mounted for him and featuring the work of stage directors and set designers - David Alagna & Frederico Alagna - who are Roberto's brothers. Alagna has never, according to French reviews, sung more beautifully than in this role which fits him like a glove. The cast also includes a notable performance by the young soprano Halie Manfrino as Roxane.

The Art of Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau is a portrait of this great artist on the occasion of his 80th birthday. The package includes two DVDs.

DVD 1: The Opera Singer features Fischer-Dieskau in some of his most acclaimed operatic roles such as Strauss's Arabella from 1960 and Don Giovanni from 1961 to Aribert Reimann's Lear from 1982.

DVD 2: Master of the Lied consists largely of an extensive Lieder anthology which, with Wolfgang Sawallisch as accompanist, offers a valuable overview of German song from Beethoven to Richard Strauss.

This release is exceptionally attractive as it presents for the first time in decades film documents of the singer both on stage and in recital. It affords the classical music lover a magnificent insight into one of not only greatest voices of our time, but also one of the most probing and intelligent of artists.

This popular DVD provides an insider's view to the making of a cult recording - the composer Bernstein featured as conductor for his most famous composition. It's a warts-and-all view: Bernstein's irritation with Carreras, his animated and open-hearted discussion of how he sees things should be, all contribute to the coming-together of a wonderfully bracing recording.
