"As strange as it may seem, country music was the music I was brought up on," says Teddy Thompson, whose parents are British folk-rock legends Richard and Linda Thompson.   "It's the music that's closest to my heart and the music that speaks to me the most, and it's always been a big influence on my own songwriting.   I was obsessed with country music when I was a kid, and it's definitely had a huge influence on the way I write songs.   I was always attracted to songs that had a brilliant pun or a clever turn of phrase, but came from a dark, bitter place.   As a writer, I've always gravitated towards that feeling."

Teddy Thompson's self-produced Up Front & Down Low offers distinctive readings of beloved country classics: George Jones ' "She Thinks I Still Care," Ernest Tubb's "Walking the Floor Over You" and Merle Haggard's "(My Friends Are Gonna Be) Strangers."   Equally impressive, however, are such lesser-known songs such as Boudleaux Bryant's regretful "Change of Heart," the yearning   "Touching Home," Dolly Parton's bittersweet "My Blue Tears," the tongue-in-cheek Bob Luman hit "Let's Think About Living" and the Elvis Presley chestnut "I'm Left, You're Right, She's Gone."   The album also features a lone Thompson original, "Down Low," whose heart-on-sleeve lyrics take on added resonance in this context.

Throughout Up Front & Down Low , the songs are supported by artful, evocative arrangements that often diverge from the material's original country milieu.   Six tracks feature distinctive string arrangements by legendary English arranger Robert Kirby, renowned for his groundbreaking work with Nick Drake, while "My Blue Tears" features strings arranged by frequent Thompson cohort Rufus Wainwright.

"The whole thing started off as a fun little project rather than an album," Thompson explains.   "And then I really started throwing myself into it and it grew into a whole other thing.   I really tried to concentrate on the songs first and foremost, rather than feeling the need to use country instrumentation or make it sound like a 'real' country record."

Further establishing their status as one of the preeminent soul/funk groups in music today, Soulive joins the famed Memphis soul label, Stax Records. The band's Stax debut, No Place Like Soul, is set for release July 31. The album marks the inaugural release by one of the label's trio of newly signed artists, which also includes Angie Stone and Isaac Hayes.

With the new addition of Toussaint, a vocalist who has spent the past several years touring with his reggae outfit The China Band, No Place Like Soul is the first Soulive album with a full-time vocalist and is the first that the band has recorded as a quartet since forming in 1999. Expanding upon the beat-driven instrumentals of 2005's Break Out, No Place Like Soul combines Toussaint's vocals with rich soul grooves that call to mind the band's legendary Stax predecessors. The album features 13 new tracks including standouts like the gospel-tinged "Waterfall," the reggaefied hip-hop of "If This World Were A Song" and the infectious soul clap of "Comfort." No Place Like Soul is produced by Stewart Lerman who has worked with such disparate talents as Loudon Wainwright III, Dar Williams and Vinicius Cantuaria.

Based in New York, Soulive is comprised of brothers Alan (drums) and Neal Evans (Hammond B-3 organ), as well as Eric Krasno (guitar) and Toussaint (vocals). The band has toured with the likes of The Rolling Stones, Dave Matthews Band, The Roots, John Mayer and Common and recorded with acclaimed artists such as Talib Kweli, Robert Randolph and Chaka Khan.

To celebrate what would have been Ella Fitzgerald's 90th birthday, Starbucks Entertainment and Concord Records are co-releasing "Love Letters From Ella," a collection of never-before-released love songs. Recorded with some of her favourite collaborators, including Count Basie and his Orchestra, Joe Pass, and André Previn, "Love Letters From Ella" also pairs the singer with The London Symphony Orchestra for the first time.

"As we've been sorting through our vaults we came across these masterful tracks Ella recorded that had surprisingly never been released before," said Glen Barros, President and CEO of Concord Music Group. "Producer Gregg Field did an amazing job enhancing these recordings and the end result is a truly remarkable record that we are very proud to be releasing with Starbucks."

"Ella Fitzgerald is one of the greatest vocalists in history and it gives us great pleasure to participate in this celebration of her life and artistry," said Ken Lombard, president Starbucks Entertainment.   "We are proud to collaborate with Concord Music Group to offer these amazing, never-before-heard recordings from an American original both at Starbucks locations and traditional retail."

The magical 10-track CD, mixed in high-definition audio, includes Ella and Basie swinging "Please Don't Talk About Me When I'm Gone," an intimate duet between Joe Pass and Fitzgerald on "The One I Love" and a playful performance of "Our Love is Here to Stay" with pianist André Previn. "Love Letters From Ella" also features the celebrated singer accompanied by The London Symphony Orchestra on a stirring rendition of "Cry Me a River." The London Symphony Orchestra recorded the accompaniment, arranged by 24-time GRAMMY ® Award-nominee Jorge Calandrelli, at Abbey Road studios in London.

Jones and his Mgs guitar player, Steve Cropper, add their funky licks to Floyd classics "Knock On Wood" and the title track, "Raise Your Hand."   Puerto Rican sonero Andy Montañez, Cuban vocalist José "Perico" Hernández, and renowned saxophonist Maceo Parker all bring their unique flavour to the project.

Pilgrimage

Next to John Coltrane, Michael Brecker - a 13-time GRAMMY winner in a career that spans more than three decades - is unquestionably the most influential tenor player in the history of jazz. As a result of his stylistic and harmonic innovations, he is the most studied contemporary jazz musician in music schools throughout the world today. Sadly, after a two-and-a-half-year battle with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) and leukemia, Brecker passed away on January 13, 2007.

While in the midst of his debilitating illness, however, Brecker persevered. His work in the studio at the time of his death includes some of the finest music he has ever recorded. Pilgrimage features the all-star lineup of pianists Herbie Hancock and Brad Mehldau, guitarist Pat Metheny, drummer Jack DeJohnette and bassist John Patitucci.

Pilgrimage, chronicles Brecker's final journey - one in which the music itself served as a sustaining force. Those present in the studio recall moments when the rigors of recording were so physically taxing - nearly to the point of collapse - for the leader whose health was compromised. In the end, it was Brecker's sheer will, and a dedication to completing the recording, that pushed him, his colleagues and the project as a whole across the finish line.

While the artist himself may be gone, the passion of life burns in the recording that survives him. "Mike just left us some of the greatest music of his career - and of his life," says Metheny. "Mike's efforts to get his final message out to all of us - which is really what it is, a message - will go down as one of the great codas in modern music history. What happened in the studio during those few days in August is impossible to describe. It's one of the most amazing, powerful, unbelievable things that I - and all who were there - have ever experienced or will ever see."

And yet, for all of the extraordinary moments that gave birth to Pilgrimage, this recording almost didn't happen. "There was the only the briefest of intervals in which this recording was possible, and in the end, Mike created the possibility," says Darryl Pitt, Brecker's longtime friend and manager. "We didn't know until the first day of rehearsal whether Mike would feel up to the task that lay before him - and we never knew what tomorrow would bring. Almost immediately following the sessions, Mike again became quite ill."

As is often the case, the adversity working against the creator only makes the creation that much stronger and richer - and all the more sublime. Every one of the nine tracks composed by Brecker on Pilgrimage is a portrait of an artist at the peak of his creative powers. The album is the first in Brecker's stellar discography which consists solely of his original compositions. Each tune is compelling in this 75-minute set, and there are moments within each that are absolutely transcendent.
