'Faure-lovers have long prayed for a CD reissue of the two sonatas from Grumiaux and Paul Crossley. And they won't be disappointed. The sound itself is pleasing--better, even, than I remember it on LP. And there is a radiance in the playing suggesting an unerring understanding of structure and style that somehow goes hand in hand with the joyous spontaneity of new discovery. The hyper-sensitive suppleness of Grumiaux's shading and phrasing is a particular delight, as is his awareness that just as much of the musical message comes from the piano--particularly in the Second Sonata. As for Crossley, not for nothing has he come to be recognized as one of this country's most dedicated Faure specialists. It would certainly be difficult to over-praise the subtlety of the two artists' interplay in both works.' Gramophone

'Some of Grumiaux's soft playing will take your breath away. Likewise in the Debussy and Ravel sonatas with István Hajdu, all models of sensitively negotiated chamber playing.' Gramophone

Violin Concerto No. 3 in D major

There is no current listing of the 12 Fantasias in the current RED CD catalogue and it happens to be a much-requested item from the Grumiaux back-catalogue. Here it makes its first appearance as an international CD release.

'The concertos chosen (from the 20 or so that have been preserved) reveal much more variety of pace and style than one might expect from a knowledge of only Telemann's Tafelmusik or suites. Iona Brown plays delightfully throughout and the ASMF seem in their element...The soloist is marginally highlighted and the harpsichord balance is just right.' Gramophone

'Grumiaux is [...] classical in style: unhurried, with carefully shaped phrasing; and, as always, with his marvellous tone showing everything at its best' Gramophone

ARTHUR GRUMIAUX | AAFJE HEYNIS
BRAHMS: Violin Concerto | Overtures | Alto Rhapsody

ARTISTS

Arthur Grumiaux, violin

Aafje Heynis, contralto

Concertgebouw Orchestra, Amsterdam

Royal Male Choir 'Apollo'

Eduard van Beinum

TRACK LISTING

BRAHMS: Violin Concerto

Academic Festival Overture

Tragic Overture

Alto Rhapsody

Considered by many to be Grumiaux's best recording of the Brahms Violin Concerto, this performance, by turn tender and muscular, receives its first international release on CD. The Concertgebouw is in glorious form under Van Beinum and Aafje Heynis is an amber-toned soloist in the inspiring Alto Rhapsody.

'Aafje Heynis's movingly eloquent account of the Alto Rhapsody ... the voice fresh, not too darkly timbred in its richness. This is lovely, spontaneous singing. When the chorus enter the radiant solo line is further enhanced, integrated yet free. A truly moving performance unerringly paced.' Gramophone

BEETHOVEN: Violin Concerto
VIOTTI: Violin Concerto No. 22

ARTISTS

Arthur Grumiaux, violin
New Philharmonia Orchestra / Alceo Galliera [Beethoven]
Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra / Edo de Waart [Viotti]

TRACK LISTING

BEETHOVEN : Violin Concerto in D, Op. 61
VIOTTI : Violin Concerto No. 22

Arthur Grumiaux's second recording of the Beethoven concerto (he recorded it previously with Eduard van Beinum and subsequently with Sir Colin Davis) is perhaps the most eloquent of them all. Beautifully recorded too, it is uniquely coupled with a charming work written in the 1790s by Giovanni Battista Viotti. Once the regular province of concert programs of violinists performing in the mid-20th century, it has fallen out of favour and receives a timely revival here.

ARTHUR GRUMIAUX | BRAHMS, MOZART, GRIEG: Violin Sonatas

ARTISTS

Arthur Grumiaux, violin & piano [Mozart; Brahms]
István Hajdu, piano [Grieg]

TRACK LISTING

MOZART : Violin Sonata in E flat, KV 481
BRAHMS : Violin Sonata No. 2 in A
GRIEG : Violin Sonata No. 3 in C minor

This must surely be a unique event in recording history! In 1959 Arthur Grumiaux went into the studios to overdub - as both violinist and pianist - the Mozart and Brahms Violin Sonatas on this recording. A bold venture of its kind in instrumental classical music and on two such different instruments, the recording has been the subject of much conjecture over the years ("Does it really exist?"). Now, for the first time, it is being made widely available. The coupling is Grumiaux's first of two recordings of Grieg's delightful Third Violin Sonata which he recorded with István Hajdu - who became a regular performing partner for Grumiaux after the death of Clara Haskil.
