The Drolc Quartet, formed in 1950 by the violinist Eduard Drolc and other Berlin Philharmonic members, acquired a reputation in the 1950s as a first-rate classical ensemble. In 1963 Drolc started all over again with three non-BPO players: this change of personnel affected the group's style, which became warmer and more romantic. The Drolc Quartet began working regularly for DG in 1965 and it is best remembered for these Reger recordings. Eduard Drolc's sudden death on 5 June 1973, aged 53, brought the end of a fine ensemble. In the Clarinet Quintet the players had the benefit of collaborating with the long-time BPO principal, Karl Leister, a specialist in the work. He has since recorded it with two other groups but this first effort has not been effaced.

All the major works of Sibelius's orchestral output are collected here in these wonderfully idiomatic performances of Neeme Järvi. The composer's perennially popular works like Finlandia, Luonnotar, Karelia Suite, Oceanides, King Christian, The Swan of Tuonela, are all included as are the Four Legends, Pohojola's Daughter, Night Ride and Sunrise, En Saga, Spring Song, 4 excerpts from Kuolema, The Bard, Tapiola.

These recordings represent a magnificent introduction into the genius of one of Scandinavia's finest composers, played, as it is, by one of today's finest conductors of this music.

Collectors should also look out for Neeme Järvi's new DG Sibelius symphonies set on SACD hybrid which is also going to be issued shortly on DG.
