In Attila Verdi presents the story of the infamous King of the Huns as he leads their fight with the Romans. Just under the surface, however, is the politics of 19th century Italy. This landmark recording of Stiffelio stars José Carreras in the title role and Sylvia Sass as his wife Lina.

Stiffelio tells of a protestant minister and his wife who has been unfaithful to him. The idea of a religious leader being married and forgiving his wife's adultery was so shocking to Italian audiences that Verdi was forced to change the setting of the opera altogether. (The version in which a medieval crusader returns to discover his wife's adultery became the opera Aroldo.)
