ARTISTS Mischa Maisky, violoncello
TRACK LISTING SERGEJ RACHMANINOV (1873–1943) Mischa Maisky champions Rachmaninov’s works for cello and piano DG's premier cellist Mischa Maisky champions Rachmaninov’s beautiful, emotional works for cello and piano. He is partnered by the talented young Argentinean pianist Sergio Tiempo, a pupil of Martha Argerich. The repertoire, including the Cello Sonata op. 19, the Danse orientale for cello and piano, as well as the five “songs without words” plus three pieces for piano (all arranged by Maisky), are all new to the DG catalogue. This release was recorded live during the Progetto Martha Argerich Festival in Lugano in June 2005 (Sonata) and in 2006. Elegie is Maisky’s fifth album to explore the “songs without words” concept. His critically acclaimed previous releases focussed on songs by Schubert, Brahms, Mendelssohn and Russian songs among others. “Maisky plays them all with his heart in the right place, which for these purposes is on his sleeve. As string-players sometimes say, he gives the music plenty of rosin.” (CD review Russian Romances, John Warrack, Gramophone) |

TRACK LISTING HAYDN: The Creation Acclaimed for their recordings of large-scale masterpieces including Bach’s St Matthew Passion, Handel’s Saul and Mozart’s Mass in C Minor, Paul McCreesh and his Gabrieli Consort turn their attention to Haydn’s greatest work: The Creation. Not only is this the world premiere recording of this newly revised version, it is also the first release of Die Schöpfung in its equally authentic English version in the Deutsche Grammophon catalogue. Employing a luxuriously large cast of five soloists, almost 100 singers and 113 players as used by Haydn for the premiere of the German version, this promises to be the English-language recording of The Creation. McCreesh and the Gabrieli Consort are regarded as highly acclaimed experts in recreating large-scale orchestral/choral works as they might have been performed historically; here they bring their unique insight to Haydn’s well-loved masterwork |

Riccardo Chailly
TRACK LISTING CD1:
CD2: The Gewandhaus Orchestra, Leipzig, have the music of Schumann and his contemporaries in their blood. Schumann spent much of his adult life in the city and these recordings, under their music director Riccardo Chailly, may well become definitive performances of his four symphonies. The editions of these Symphonies are curious and novel, as they include the revisions made by Gustav Mahler. Few, if any, recordings exist of these versions. Mahler was a life-long Schumann enthusiast, and his editing, coupled with his intuitive understanding of the orchestral score, make for enhanced music and allow Schumann’s original intentions to be communicated with even greater effect. Since his arrival as the principal conductor of the Gewandhaus, Chailly has rejuvenated the orchestra, and their interpretations of the German Romantic repertoire have won rave reviews around the world. Their collaboration has garnered the Gewandhaus Orchestra some very important awards, including Record of the Year at the 2007 Gramophone Awards and their CD of Schumann’s Symphonies 2 & 4 won a 2007 Echo Award. “What has happened at the Gewandhaus?... the orchestra sounds reborn. The obvious answer is the arrival of Riccardo Chailly...” The Times, London “The most ecstatic ovation I have witnessed this season at Carnegie Hall” New York Times “The orchestra has seemingly inexhaustible depth to its sound... the ensemble playing perfectly balances power and transparency” The Boston Globe |

TRACK LISTING ANTONIO VIVALDI (1678–1741) Amor Profano: Andrea Marcon follows up with a project of unknown Vivaldi hits Amor profano is the follow-up project to the spectacular album Amor sacro that the soprano Simone Kermes recorded with Andrea Marcon and his Venice Baroque Orchestra. Amor sacro received highest critical acclaim worldwide, with journalists using superlatives to express their praise. The critic of The Guardian judged the recording to be “the most exciting disc I’ve heard in ages”, Le Monde de la Musique considered Kermes “an ideal interpreter of these pieces”, while Stereoplay in Germany stated, “Marcon’s Venetian Baroque ensemble really made sparks fly”. Amor profano presents worldly repertoire, with a selection of Vivaldi’s most dramatic and easily accessible “Canti d’amore e di guerra”. These arias from Vivaldi’s lesser-known or virtually unknown operas have been especially chosen for the charismatic, dazzling voice of Simone Kermes and the lively playing of the VBO under Andrea Marcon. The first album consisted of sacred, non-liturgical repertoire that was performed during Mass or Vespers. The album includes a number of world-premiere recordings and thus contributes to the continuing discovery of the composer and the “Vivaldi boom” of our times

TRACK LISTING JANÁCEK: The Excursions of Mr Broucek An exciting repertoire discovery and entirely new to the Universal Catalogue: only two other recordings exist! Janáèek’s only mature comic opera combines an adventurous story – including a trip to the moon and travelling back in time to the fifteenth century – with some of the composer’s most imaginative music. The opera was completed in 1918 after almost 10 years work on the score and 8 different writers working on the libretto. Live recording of an acclaimed semi-staged performance in London, February 2007, performed by a strong Slavic cast and the BBC Symphony Orchestra under the baton of its Chief Conductor, acclaimed Czech maestro Jirí Belohlávek. "Jirí Belohlávek conducted the BBC Symphony Orchestra with formidable passion throughout . . . stirring choruses and ricocheting brass figurations finally mark the emergence of Janáèek's mature compositional voice and usher in music as daring as anything he wrote . . . It was all thrillingly done." (The Guardian) |

ARTISTS MIKHAIL PLETNEV, piano
TRACK LISTING BEETHOVEN Mikhail Pletnev makes his mark on Beethoven’s legacy with revolutionary new recordings of all Nine Symphonies and the Five Piano Concertos. “Pletnev’s pianistic mastery remains breathtaking” (Daily Telegraph) From a DG perspective, we could have declared 2007 the Beethoven year as many of our stars dedicated their talents to the composer’s works. Mikhail Pletnev’s Beethoven project even stretches into 2008 with this recording of the Fifth Piano Concerto, Emperor. With this release – once again with his Russian National Orchestra under Christian Gansch – Pletnev accomplishes his marathon undertaking of recording each of Beethoven’s five piano concertos and nine symphonies. The previous releases of the enigmatic Russian master’s Beethoven project have received the highest praise: “I genuinely wondered if even five stars weren’t insulting to playing of such glorious, playful penetration” wrote the reviewer in BBC Music Magazine while the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung wrote of Pletnev’s playing: “in terms of sheer pianism there seem to be no limits.” “There’s life and surprise in every bar” wrote The Times of Pletnev’s Beethoven. It’s a statement that sums-up his approach to the music: “The most important thing for me is that the music must have an immediate emotional effect on people, not only as a masterpiece from the past. Every phrase, every moment of joy should be lived as it’s lived in our real lives,” he explains. This release of the Emperor Concerto promises to be the event for all lovers of piano repertoire and of Beethoven’s works |
