LIVE BROADCAST OF 2008 NEW YEAR’S CONCERT IN VIENNA ON SBS-TV

The New Year’s Concert in Vienna has been a glorious tradition year on year for over six decades. A best-selling classical event year on year, the concert has unique global appeal. It is broadcast on TV and radio to over 50 countries, and is viewed by tens of millions of people all over the world.

The 2008 New Year’s Day Concert will be conducted by the eminent conductor Georges Prêtre for the first time. Prêtre is the first French conductor to receive this honour. The concert programme for 1st January 2008 will be the customary collection of Strauss delights, but this time with a French theme.

The concert will open with Napoleon March op.156 by Johann Strauss II, performed for the first time in a New Year’s Concert. Other French novelties include the waltz Paris by the elder Johann Strauss, composed in 1838 for his Paris concerts, and the Versailles Galop. Also performed for the first time are the Orpheus Quadrille, which was greeted with thunderous applause at its first performance in April 1860, and the Laxenburg Polka by Josef Strauss.

The traditional encores the Blue Danube Waltz and Radetzky March, will be joined by the Sport Polka, as a nod to the European Football Championship in Vienna in 2008. The year’s second great sporting event, the Summer Olympics in Beijing, is saluted by the orchestra earlier in the programme with an early work of the elder Johann Strauss, his exotically coloured Chinese Galop.

George Prêtre has a special association with the Wiener Philharmoniker dating back to 1966. He is one of the few French Artists to have received the highest decorations both in France and abroad: Commander of the French Légion d’honneur and the Austrian Cross for Services Rendered to Science and the Arts. He also became Honorary Member of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Vienna - the highest decoration an artist can obtain in Vienna.

The concert will be broadcast live on SBS-TV and the CD & DVD will then be promoted on that network.

"One of the most important, and versatile, singers of our age" The Times

Jonas Kaufmann is without question the most versatile tenor of his generation, and his current repertoire includes an astonishing range of opera roles from Mozart to Wagner. He is also a celebrated Lieder interpreter, equally at home on the concert platform. His Decca Debut album celebrates a luscious range of Romantic opera arias, showcasing the astonishing diversity of his voice.

Jonas Kaufmann has made stunning debuts in many of the world's leading opera houses in recent seasons. For example, to fabulous acclaim he appeared as Alfredo in La Traviata at the Metropolitan Opera and Chicago Lyric Opera - "smoothly burnished, beautifully focused... and always disarmingly musical" New York Magazine. He was Don Jose in the 2007 new production of Carmen at the Royal Opera, Covent Garden - "superb" The Guardian.

Romantic Arias includes opera favourites by the Italian giants Verdi and Puccini, by French greats Berlioz and Bizet, and by Wagner, the epitome of German Romanticism. Kaufmann responds to each composer with seductive ease. 'With his full, warm voice rich in russet and ebony colours, he sings Italian and French with as much aplomb as he does his native German...' The Telegraph

To celebrate the composer's 150th Anniversary in 2008 - the definitive collection of his most popular operas in classic performances!  Decca’s recordings of Puccini’s operas rank among the very finest ever committed to disc. This legacy was started in 1951 when Renata Tebaldi made her first recording of Madama Butterfly and throughout the rest of the 1950s Tebaldi recorded Puccini’s other major operas; at the end of the 1950s new stereo versions were made of Madama Butterfly and La Bohème. Tebaldi was cast alongside such distinguished colleagues as Carlo Bergonzi and Mario del Monaco and acclaimed opera maestri at the helm of these recordings include Francesco Molinari–Pradelli and Tullio Serafin. This collection of the great Puccini operas includes the stereo versions of Butterfly and Bohème and is the ideal collection of some of the world’s most popular and enduring operas in acclaimed recordings that have been an integral part of Decca’s legendary opera catalogue for the past fifty years.

Choir History
Froncysyllte (pronounced vron-cuss-ulth tay) is a small village at the eastern entrance to the Vale of Llangollen. Set in beautiful countryside in the Northeast corner of Wales it would be "just another village" if Thomas Telford had not built his famous aqueduct to carry the Llangollen Canal across the River Dee. Thousands of visitors come each year to marvel at his engineering skills and the groundbreaking work of the local iron foundries 200 years ago that made the project possible.
In 1946 the people of Llangollen (which is 4 miles down the road) as a gesture to International Peace, decided to ask former enemies, to come together in the friendly competitive atmosphere of a traditional Welsh Eisteddfod. Invitations went out for 1947 and the Llangollen International, Musical Eisteddfod was born. Europe was in the grip of ruin. No one was sure if anyone would come. But they did come, and have been coming ever since.
To compete in the Male Voice Competition at the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod the Choir needed 60 voices so Wilfred Jones, the leader of the Froncysyllte Youth Club, persuaded the young men of the village to join. He was so successful that the 1947 Fron Choir had the youngest membership of any Welsh Male Voice Choir - a tradition of youth that has continued to this day.
