ARTISTS TRACKLISTING Were Mozart alive today, he would be astonished at his popularity and fame. Last century saw celebrations of the sesquicentenary of Mozart's death (1941), and the bicentenaries of his birth (1956) and death (1991), each accompanied by performances, broadcasts and recordings of his music. With Haydn and Beethoven, Mozart forms the trinity of composers whose music epitomises the Classical style of the late eighteenth century; with his younger contemporary Beethoven, Mozart today vies for the title of 'World's Most Famous Composer'. A Google search on 'Mozart' returns more than seventeen-and-a-half million results, while his name and image brand everything from apparel and ashtrays to golf balls and 'gourmet' chocolate, bathroom towels to package tours. Recently, it was claimed that listening to Mozart can increase IQ. An avalanche of recordings and books on the so-called 'Mozart Effect' ensued, although the alleged phenomenon has since been discredited. Touches of Mozart's music can be heard in television commercials, being played by busking quartets on street-corners, as telephone music-on-hold, and in film soundtracks: 'Mozart in the Movies' lists 274 films, from The Blue Angel (1930) to Batman Begins (2005). Excerpts from Eine kleine Nachtmusik can be heard in almost 40 soundtracks - including such unlikely candidates as Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle and Alien - while 20 feature movements from the Requiem. No fewer than 92 films include arias and instrumental music from Mozart's operas, which in their own right perform strongly at the box office. Mozart's public profile received an unprecedented boost during the 1980s from the stage and screen versions of Peter Schaffer's hit play Amadeus, which helped spawn something of a Mozart mania as the 1991 bicentenary approached. Even today, twenty years following the film's release, the mythical image of 'Amadeus' (the infantile, irreverent, dirty-talking prankster who effortlessly composed divinely beautiful music, only to die in poverty, poisoned by his jealous rival, the court composer Salieri) retains its imaginative hold. 27 January 2006 marks Mozart's 250 th birthday in recognition of which we offer this 2CD set, The Amadeus Code. Clocking in at nearly 160 minutes, it boasts the finest performances from a star-studded galaxy of artists (Bernstein, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, Böhm, Levine, Vienna Philharmonic, Terfel) ... an unashamed 'Best Of'. All the popular Mozart tunes - including several heard in the blockbuster movie Amadeus - are there. There's the Clarinet Concerto (also used prominently in Out of Africa), Eine kleine Nachtmusik, the Piano Concerto No.21 and of course the great Requiem. Advertised on SBS-TV, this compilation also encourages purchasers to solve a numbers crossword and crack the 'Amadeus Code' - and then go into a draw to win two flights to Vienna!
