+ Bonus Disc: Il Sogno Suite

Elvis Costello presents old and new songs in a unique 'big-band orchestra' setting - recorded live at North Sea Jazz Festival (plus a bonus-disc edit of Il Sogno) - here is his first rock 'n' jazz album!

'This record may explain what I've been doing during the last twelve years when I haven't had an electric guitar in my hands'
(Elvis Costello)

Elvis Costello's third album on Deutsche Grammophon is a multi-faceted offering of all-new recordings of old hits and newer material, all arranged for the Metropole Orkest - a lauded, unique jazz big-band with a terrific string section.

This new project, titled My Flame Burns Blue, is a live recording of his performance with the Metropole Orkest at the 2004 North Sea Jazz Festival. The album consists of songs arranged for voice, piano, and orchestra by Costello, Sy Johnson, Bill Frisell, Vince Mendoza, and Steve Nieve It features several previously unrecorded titles as well as some of Costello's well-known songs in new arrangements.

As a bonus, it also features a 45 minute suite from the ballet Il sogno, which comes from Costello's first disc of his own compositions for DG, conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas and the London Symphony Orchestra.

Were Mozart alive today, he would be astonished at his popularity and fame. Last century saw celebrations of the sesquicentenary of Mozart's death (1941), and the bicentenaries of his birth (1956) and death (1991), each accompanied by performances, broadcasts and recordings of his music. With Haydn and Beethoven, Mozart forms the trinity of composers whose music epitomises the Classical style of the late eighteenth century; with his younger contemporary Beethoven, Mozart today vies for the title of 'World's Most Famous Composer'.

A Google search on 'Mozart' returns more than seventeen-and-a-half million results, while his name and image brand everything from apparel and ashtrays to golf balls and 'gourmet' chocolate, bathroom towels to package tours. Recently, it was claimed that listening to Mozart can increase IQ. An avalanche of recordings and books on the so-called 'Mozart Effect' ensued, although the alleged phenomenon has since been discredited.

Touches of Mozart's music can be heard in television commercials, being played by busking quartets on street-corners, as telephone music-on-hold, and in film soundtracks: 'Mozart in the Movies' lists 274 films, from The Blue Angel (1930) to Batman Begins (2005). Excerpts from Eine kleine Nachtmusik can be heard in almost 40 soundtracks - including such unlikely candidates as Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle and Alien - while 20 feature movements from the Requiem. No fewer than 92 films include arias and instrumental music from Mozart's operas, which in their own right perform strongly at the box office.

Mozart's public profile received an unprecedented boost during the 1980s from the stage and screen versions of Peter Schaffer's hit play Amadeus, which helped spawn something of a Mozart mania as the 1991 bicentenary approached. Even today, twenty years following the film's release, the mythical image of 'Amadeus' (the infantile, irreverent, dirty-talking prankster who effortlessly composed divinely beautiful music, only to die in poverty, poisoned by his jealous rival, the court composer Salieri) retains its imaginative hold.

27 January 2006 marks Mozart's 250 th birthday in recognition of which we offer this 2CD set, The Amadeus Code. Clocking in at nearly 160 minutes, it boasts the finest performances from a star-studded galaxy of artists (Bernstein, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, Böhm, Levine, Vienna Philharmonic, Terfel) ... an unashamed 'Best Of'.

All the popular Mozart tunes - including several heard in the blockbuster movie Amadeus - are there. There's the Clarinet Concerto (also used prominently in Out of Africa), Eine kleine Nachtmusik, the Piano Concerto No.21 and of course the great Requiem.

Advertised on SBS-TV, this compilation also encourages purchasers to solve a numbers crossword and crack the 'Amadeus Code' - and then go into a draw to win two flights to Vienna!

Mariss Jansons to make New Year's Concert debut in 2006

Broadcast on TV and radio to over 40 countries around the world, the annual New Year's Day Concert in Vienna has been an exalted tradition for more than six decades. For the fourth year in a row, Deutsche Grammophon is releasing this concert of all concerts, again on CD and DVD.

As their conductor this year, the Wiener Philharmoniker have invited a first-timer, Mariss Jansons. Currently the conductor of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam, Jansons's appearances with the Wiener Philharmoniker date back to 1992 and include more than 65 successful concert performances. Though a newcomer to the New Year's Day Concert podium, Jansons has always had a passion for the music of Johann Strauss and family as well as for the event itself: 'It is something quite special: a wonderful opportunity to listen to this music and get to know it. This atmosphere, the Wiener Philharmoniker, the Musikverein - all that adds up to a long and wonderful tradition resulting in fantastic, very specific music.'

Once again, the program is a tasteful mixture of well-known classics and premieres, which include Johann Strauss II's Bundesschützenmarsch 'Auf's Korn!' and Liebesbotschaft-Galopp as well as Eduard Strauss's Telephon Polka française.

Two other premieres give a nod to Mozart Year 2006: the overture from Figaro and Lanner's waltz Die Mozartisten.

The DVD release will include performances by the Wiener Staatsopern Ballet, joined this year by one of the world's most revered choreographers, John Neumeier. Neumeier has been director and chief choreographer of The Hamburg Ballet for more than 20 years and is a towering presence in the world of dance.

OVERVIEW
The six Sonatas & Partitas for solo violin by JS Bach are regarded by many as the greatest works for the violin ever written. They have been described as 'legendary and monumental', 'the profound work of genius' and 'representing the very pinnacle of human achievement, a transcendence, through music, to another world'. Demanding a technical mastery and innate musical understanding on the part of the soloist these works have been recorded by the most revered violinists of the past century. With this recording Richard Tognetti confirms his place as one of the world's finest violinists providing his own distinctive and unique interpretation of these beloved works.

Richard Tognetti has established an international reputation for his compelling performances and artistic individualism. Triple Academy Award winner Peter Jackson (The Lord of the Rings trilogy) directs the dramatic adventure King Kong, bringing his sweeping cinematic vision to the iconic story of the gigantic ape captured in the wild and brought to civilization where he meets his tragic fate. Academy Award nominee Naomi Watts (21 grams) portrays Ann Darrow, an actress from the world of vaudeville who finds herself out of a job in Depression-era New York. Directed by Steven Spielberg, MUNICH is an historical thriller set in the aftermath of the 1972 massacre of 11 Israeli athletes at the Munich Olympics. Inspired by actual events, the narrative is based on a number of sources, including the recollections of some who participated in the events themselves.

The film recounts the dramatic story of the secret Israeli squad assigned to track down and assassinate 11 Palestinians believed to have planned the 1972 Munich massacre -- and the personal toll this mission of revenge takes on the team and the man who led it. Eric Bana ('Troy') stars as the Mossad agent charged with leading the band of specialists brought together for this operation.

Cinema release: December 23 2005.
