Click here to visit the official website: www.deutschegrammophon.com/newyearsconcert2005 SBS will broadcast the concert live from Vienna on 1 January 2005 at 9pm.
ARTISTS TRACKLISTING JOSEF STRAUSS JOHANN STRAUSS JOHANN STRAUSS JOSEF HELLMESBERGER JOHANN STRAUSS JOHANN STRAUSS EDUARD STRAUSS JOHANN STRAUSS I Broadcast on TV and radio in over 40 countries around the world, the New Year's Concert is undoubtedly one of the biggest classical music events - reflected in CD sales of over 150,000 (for the 2004 Concert) and a very encouraging number of DVD sales, with almost 30,000 copies sold in 2004. For 2005 the Wiener Philharmoniker have invited Lorin Maazel to be their conductor, and Maestro Maazel has more than one reason to celebrate: on 6 March he celebrates his 75th birthday, and this concert will also be a silver jubilee for him, for it is 25 years since he was first invited to direct the orchestra at this event. Thanks to the varied output of the many members of the Strauss family and associates, there will be again no fewer than five pieces that are receiving their New Year's Concert premières: Indigo-March and Haute volée-Polka by Johann Strauss, a waltz called Lustschwärmer and the quick Polka Winterlust by Josef Strauss, as well as the Polka française Auf Wiener Art by Joseph Hellmesberger. For the ballet scenes, Vladimir Malakov, director of the Berlin State Opera Ballet, will bring along his beautiful young soloist Polina Semionova - gold medal winner of two Moscow Ballet Competitions and the 'rising star' of the classical ballet world. It is the first time she's performing in Austria. The ballet will be produced on 2 December 2004 at Palais Coburg in Vienna, a venue that has seen many remarkable first performances of works by Johann Strauss. Vladimir Malakov is not only the choreographer but will also join Polina for Ein Herz, ein Sinn as her partner. Another highlight for the DVD will be the participation of the Italian soloist Giuseppe Picone.

TRACKLISTING Donny Osmond has been waiting a lifetime for this moment. We have seen many changing faces since he first sang his way into our hearts, from teen idol to seasoned stage performer, from TV host to game-show presenter. Now, with the upcoming release of What I Meant To Say, it's time at last to meet Donny Osmond the singer-songwriter. The new album reunites Donny with Gary Barlow and Eliot Kennedy, the talented production team behind Somewhere In Time, his 2002 collection of classic love songs that went platinum in the UK in one week. The song What I Meant To Say, spells out Donny's ambition for the album. 'The title really says it all, particularly the fact that most of the songs are co-written by me.' And this one packs a powerful twist. 'It is such a cliché lyric that you think it's a sappy song,' admits Donny. 'But at the very end you find out those are all the lines he meant to say but never did. I think that when people hear the twist, it has a powerful impact. Because so many have lost a love or ruined a relationship because they didn't say what they should have said or wanted to say 'So, I guess we wrote a sappy song with an edge!' All the songs on What I Meant To Say come straight from the heart. You would expect nothing less from Donny Osmond as a man, and you get the same from Donny Osmond the songwriter. Modesty might forbid him from putting it that way himself - but it's what he meant to say. |

ARTISTS A deeply moving new Australian work. Composed by Andrew Schultz, with libretto by Gordon Kalton Williams, the cantata Journey to Horseshoe Bend features actors Aaron Pedersen and John Stanton, and the Ntaria Ladies Choir from Hermannsburg, Northern Territory, making their first Sydney appearance together with bass baritone Rodney Macann, the Philharmonia Motet Choir and the Sydney Symphony, conducted by David Porcelijn. Journey to Horseshoe Bend is a musical interpretation of T.G.H. Strehlow's autobiographical novel of the same name. It tells of his journey down the Finke River Valley of Central Australia where the ancient landscapes of the Aranda people and European pastoral holdings co-exist. Fascinating narratives of Australian history, fusing European and Aboriginal traditions, unfold as a spiritual voyage of discovery. Journey to Horseshoe Bend tells the story of Pastor Carl Strehlow's final journey through the Finke River in 1922 as seen through the eyes of Theo, his 14-year-old son who later achieved renown as the anthropologist, T.G.H. Strehlow. As his father, the German missionary from the Hermannsburg Mission, lies dying and battles with his faith, Theo is awakened to the mythical significance of the Aranda landscapes by his guide, Njitiaka. T.G.H. Strehlow wrote Journey to Horseshoe Bend in 1966 at the age of 59. MARKETING: |

ARTISTS TRACKLISTING DALL'ABACO HANDEL MARCELLO SARTORIO VIVALDI This new recording from the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra assembles some of the most stunning baroque music ever composed in emotive and unique performances from Australia's leading period instrument orchestra. Brandenburg oboist Kirsten Barry takes a major role in this recording in the two most famous of all Baroque oboe concertos (Albinoni and Marcello D minor concertos). The slow movement of the Albinoni gained extra popularity as a result of its inclusion in the best selling Swoon collections. The arrangements for oboe and orchestra of a selection of great Handel arias are another very special feature of this disc. The Australian Brandenburg Orchestra is made up of leading specialists in the performance of Baroque and Classical music. The Orchestra is committed to energetic and lively programming, combining popular Baroque and Classical favourites with premiere Australian performances of seldom-heard masterpieces. The musicians play from original edition scores and on instruments of the period. These have been restored or faithfully reproduced to recreate a 17th-century orchestral sound and they differ significantly from their modern equivalents - softer and more articulated with an often raw and earthy timbre. The Orchestra's name pays tribute to the Brandenburg Concertos of J.S. Bach, whose musical genius was central to the Baroque and Classical periods. Founded in 1990 by Paul Dyer when a team of hand-picked musicians was assembled for intensive rehearsals leading up to debut performances at the Sydney Opera House for its Mostly Mozart Festival, the success of that first concert still rings true to this day - the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra combines historical integrity with a distinctly fresh Australian style.
