ROSSINI La Cenerentola

El?na Garan?a builds on the success of her previous album, Bel Canto, incarnating the bel canto title role heroine, Cinderella, in Rossini’s touching and hilarious comic masterpiece, La Cenerentola.

This new DVD was recorded live at the Metropolitan Opera during one of the fabled theatre’s greatest nights last season.

Maurizio Benini waves a magic wand of a baton, eliciting effervescent, transparent, shining sound from the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and Chorus. Piquant visuals and superb acting by the entire cast make this a DVD opera lovers will watch again and again.

The Philadelphia Inquirer lauded: “Mezzo-soprano El?na Garan?a was a sensation at the Metropolitan Opera's spring simulcast of La Cenerentola with her vocal virtuosity, intensely blond glamour, and acting ability…”

Bonuses: the opera is introduced by baritone, Thomas Hampson, who also interviews Garan?a deftly and with charm.

In February 2010 El?na Garan?a will sing Angelina, the leading part, in the production of La Cenerentola at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris.

MASSENET Thaïs

Renée Fleming triumphs as the glamorous courtesan Thaïs in Massenet’s romantic tragedy set in fourth century Alexandria and the Egyptian desert. The timeless struggle between earthly desire and spiritual redemption finally destroys the resolve of the monk Athanaël (Thomas Hampson), just as the newly penitent Thaïs ascends heavenward. Jesús López-Cobos gives a masterly performance of Massenet’s sensuous score, with concert master David Chan contributing a ravishing ‘Méditation’.
