David Hobson tenor
TRACK LISTING FRANCK Panis angelicus
TOURING IN MARCH Their one-off performance from the duet from Bizet’s The Pearl Fishers became one of the most-played tracks in Australian recording history, topping the Classic 100 Opera survey and featuring in countless CD compilations. Now, for the first time, superstars David Hobson and Teddy Tahu Rhodes have joined forces to record an entire album of glorious duets for tenor and bass. In an atmosphere of high emotion at the end of 2008, the two friends assembled at Eugene Goossens Hall in Sydney to record much-loved songs of hope, faith and glory, as if in defiance of the glum mood of the times brought on by the world economic crisis. Both artists brought with them their wish-lists of favourite songs: the result is an album of music that uplifts the spirit and showcases the uncanny beauty of these two magnificent voices united as one. Highlights of a luminous album include O Holy Night, Amazing Grace, Abide With Me, and sublime solo versions of the spiritual Poor Wayfaring Stranger and Leonard Cohen’s classic Hallelujah. |

Annalisa Kerrigan, soprano
TRACK LISTING CD1:
CD2: Annalisa Kerrigan’s haunting voice lingers in the memory long after the actual music on these two stunning albums has died away. This elegant boxed set is the musical equivalent of a clear mountain stream, the purity and clarity of Kerrigan’s soprano seeming to pour forth from some celestial source. Waiting on an Angel brings together classical and folk favourites, from Panis angelicus and the Bach/Gounod Ave Maria to O Waly Waly and As He Moved through the Fair. Her exquisite vocal tone is equally at home in Ireland – Timeless Songs of the Emerald Isle, inspired by her own Irish heritage. This is singing of the highest quality, deriving from simpler times when sheer vocal beauty and heartfelt emotion were enough to move men of stone to tears. |

Melbourne Symphony Orchestra
TRACK LISTING WAGNER Tannhäuser: Overture and Venusberg Music It was a night that music-loving Melburnians will never forget, when in November 2007, Sir Charles Mackerras conducted just one single, electrifying concert with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, bringing down the house and winning a Helpmann Award for Best Performance in a Classical Concert. The orchestra played out of its skin that evening in Elgar’s most beloved orchestral masterpiece, and all the excitement of the occasion is captured in this live concert recording. This is heartland repertoire for Sir Charles Mackerras and the MSO, and the lush, richly textured melodies are presented in a glowing performance that also includes Wagner’s mighty Venusberg Music and Delius’ The Walk to the Paradise Garden. The entire spine-tingling feeling in the hall that night is captured in this rare jewel of a disc. |

Now Gidon Kremer is proud to present Kremerata Baltica's first CD on the Deutsche Grammophon label: a fascinating exploration of the musical world his group inhabits. The music - both original compositions and arrangements - is by a number of living Russian or Baltic composers. With the exception of Kancheli (from Georgia), most of the names are unfamiliar to Western listeners (see tracklisting below). The CD offers a wide range of styles: there's a fiercely virtuosic Liszt Violin Concerto (an arrangement of his "Dante" Sonata for piano, tracks 1 - 5) , jazzed-up Mozart (variations on a familiar theme from a piano sonata; tracks 6 - 17), avant-garde tangos and rags (tracks 18, 19), minimalism (track 21) and a brilliant encore (track 22), in which the orchestra become a chorus as well. The contemporary sound of mobile phones also makes a poignant appearance in a tribute to Charles Ives (track 20) ... The cover (conceived by Gidon Kremer) and realized by the brilliant British illustrator Neil Gower, provides a further guide to what's going on: colour coded according to the flags of the Baltic nations (that tangoing couple are obviously from Estonia, the sea-lion is playing with a Lithuanian ball), the names and features all relate closely to the contents of the CD - something to explore and decipher. |
