The CD offers a wide range of styles: there's a fiercely virtuosic Liszt Violin Concerto (an arrangement of his "Dante" Sonata for piano, tracks 1 - 5) , jazzed-up Mozart (variations on a familiar theme from a piano sonata; tracks 6 - 17), avant-garde tangos and rags (tracks 18, 19), minimalism (track 21) and a brilliant encore (track 22), in which the orchestra become a chorus as well. The contemporary sound of mobile phones also makes a poignant appearance in a tribute to Charles Ives (track 20) ... The cover (conceived by Gidon Kremer) and realized by the brilliant British illustrator Neil Gower, provides a further guide to what's going on: colour coded according to the flags of the Baltic nations (that tangoing couple are obviously from Estonia, the sea-lion is playing with a Lithuanian ball), the names and features all relate closely to the contents of the CD - something to explore and decipher. |
