Deutsche Grammophon celebrates the 80th birthday (27 March 2007) and manifold talents of Mstislav Rostropovich, one of the truly charismatic artists of our age, with this comprehensive selection of his recordings as soloist, conductor and chamber-music player.

Brought together here for the first time in a single 8-CD box are all his concerto recordings for the label, as well as his symphonic and ballet repertoire, plus chamber music with Martha Argerich (Chopin, Schumann), Rudolf Serkin (Brahms), and the Emerson String Quartet (Schubert Quintet).

Back in the catalogue are the early concertos of Vivaldi, Tartini and Boccherini, and the Shostakovich Second Concerto. Restored, too, are prime examples of Rostropovich's conducting talents: the Shostakovich Fifth Symphony, the Prokofiev Romeo and Juliet Ballet Suites, and a rare Tchaikovsky Capriccio italien. Many of these recordings are being made available in a budget box for the first time: Messiaen's Concert à quatre, Brahms Sonatas with Serkin, Schubert String Quintet with the Emersons.
