Romance. Passion. Emotion. These words are synonymous with Andrea Bocelli. Almost ten years ago he exploded onto the international music scene with Romanza and has since sold over 50 million albums worldwide.

Amore - released amongst the glamour of the Winter Olympics in Torino, Italy (where he will perform at the closing ceremonies) and the romance of Valentine's Day - finds Andrea straying from the classical ground with which he is most familiar. The concept of the album came from acclaimed producer and long-time Bocelli fan David Foster, along with producer Humberto Gatica and co-producer Tony Renis.

While creating Bocelli's first-ever album of popular songs, Andrea and his producers searched the musical eras from the 1920's to the 1980's for romantic songs including "Les Feuilles Mortes" (Autumn Leaves), "Somos Novios" (It's Impossible), "Besame Mucho", "Estate" (featuring trumpeter Chris Botti) and "Because We Believe"--a new song written especially for the 2006 Winter Olympics. Guest appearances on the album by Stevie Wonder and Christina Aguilera.

Mariss Jansons makes his New Year's Concert debut in 2006

Broadcast on TV and radio to over 40 countries around the world, the annual New Year's Day Concert in Vienna has been an exalted tradition for more than six decades. For the fourth year in a row, Deutsche Grammophon is releasing this concert of all concerts, again on CD and DVD.

As their conductor this year, the Wiener Philharmoniker have invited a first-timer, Mariss Jansons. Currently the conductor of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam, Jansons's appearances with the Wiener Philharmoniker date back to 1992 and include more than 65 successful concert performances. Though a newcomer to the New Year's Day Concert podium, Jansons has always had a passion for the music of Johann Strauss and family as well as for the event itself: 'It is something quite special: a wonderful opportunity to listen to this music and get to know it. This atmosphere, the Wiener Philharmoniker, the Musikverein - all that adds up to a long and wonderful tradition resulting in fantastic, very specific music.'

Once again, the program is a tasteful mixture of well-known classics and premieres, which include Johann Strauss II's Bundesschützenmarsch 'Auf's Korn!' and Liebesbotschaft-Galopp as well as Eduard Strauss's Telephon Polka française.

Two other premieres give a nod to Mozart Year 2006: the overture from Figaro and Lanner's waltz Die Mozartisten.

The DVD release will include performances by the Wiener Staatsopern Ballet, joined this year by one of the world's most revered choreographers, John Neumeier. Neumeier has been director and chief choreographer of The Hamburg Ballet for more than 20 years and is a towering presence in the world of dance.

The present two CDs - re-released to mark the occasion of the Vienna Philharmonic's first tour of Australia in September (Sydney only) - bring together a number of highlights from what is arguably the richest discography in the world. These are recordings, in short, that represent the best of a passionate working relationship that has lasted many decades - great moments that cannot be taken for granted even in the life of a first-rate body of players but in which everything simply seems to have turned out a success, and everything appears to have been said.

The story of one of the most exciting collections of classical recordings began as long ago as the 1920s. In the wake of World War II, technical revolutions in sound quality followed hard on each other's heels, encouraging the orchestra to record intensively and in that way to extend its reputation until it encompassed the whole of the world. Of not inconsiderable help in this development was the Philharmonic's unfailing ability to attract the leading conductors of their day.

Countless recordings were made in rapid succession, some of them achieving sales of over one million copies worldwide, while others have acquired the status of collectors' items, hard to find, known only to a handful of insiders and discussed with conspiratorial intensity in internet chatrooms, where they are compared with other recordings and commended to other collectors. And many recordings have been both these things.
