THE VOICE IS BACK!

Singing sensation Russell Watson is back with his fourth highly anticipated album Amore Musica!

Since emerging on the music scene a few short years ago, Russell Watson has become one of its most popular artists. Each new recording is much anticipated by his fans. Amore Musica is certain to please those who already love the voice of Russell Watson, but this CD is likely to win him many new admirers too!

Russell is truly excited to present this program of songs with lyrics by Diane Warren, Gary Barlow and Elliot Kennedy, who he believes to be the greatest songwriters in the world. 'All the songs are about love, music, peace, happiness and hope. That reflects the way I feel right now. It's a record to hold hands to. I want this record to be something that people think about affectionately. I've never generated as much passion in my lyrics. It's a different sound. It's not about Russell Watson and the way he sings it, it's about Russell Watson singing from the heart and I don't think I've ever done that before.'

The music ranges from the swingy Amore e Musica, to the melodramatic Gladiatore, to the gorgeous Alchemist, a track with Lara Fabian. There's also the inspirational I Believe and the rousing You Raise Me Up. Throughout this variety of moods and emotions what is most palpable is that Watson has a different sound coming from a different place. His voice channels compassion, empathy and the certain knowledge that however low or however high you're feeling he's been there with you!

TRACKLISTING
100 tracks of the best-loved piano music by Beethoven, Haydn, Mozart, Bach, Schubert, Schumann, Mendelssohn, Ravel, Debussy and many others. Full tracklisting is embargoed until 13 February.

What is the one piece of piano music you cannot live without? This question was asked of the Australian public through a poll by ABC Classic FM and the result is this collection - The Classic 100 Piano. Over 9 hours of music on 8 CDs, this definitive set contains Australia's favourite piano masterpieces. The previous CD set The Classic 100 was a best-seller in 2002. 'The Classic 100 Piano' will be even bigger.

The piano is one of the most studied and played instruments in the world. Even people who have never taken a lesson have, at one time or another played the instrument for fun. And Australia has a very long history with the piano - in the 19th century, over 750,000 pianos were imported into this country! So the piano is an obvious and very popular choice for the follow-up to the first survey - The Classic 100 (February 2002), which comprised listeners' choices of their favourite symphonies, concertos, operas, chamber music, songs, solo instrumental works and so on.

The Classic 100 Piano is made up only of pieces of music performed on one piano, either written specifically for the instrument, or other works commonly performed on the piano. This also included early keyboard works with a performance tradition on the modern piano.

As with the previous survey, The Classic 100 Piano is a unique reflection of local conditions, history and interests. The results have both confirmed what we have always regarded as famous and beloved works and introduced new pieces that have touched people today through films, advertising and compact discs and the sheer joy of listening to them.

The Classic 100 Piano provides an additional layer of connection for listeners: for many people not only did they choose the one piece of music they could not live without hearing but they named the piece they could not live without performing. Their recollection of at least once performing the piece was so important that it was a memory they could not live without. A lifelong love of music sparked by learning to play the piano and memories of playing a piece on the piano as a child was frequently given as the reason why certain pieces held a special significance for listeners.

People often gave reasons that were about the way the music made them feel or simply used words to describe the music itself. Others made selections from both a personal and historical perspective, choosing works that had a profound effect on music itself.

Ultimately, The Classic 100 Piano is a list of important music. Important because it has connected with and communicated to so many who regard it as something they can't imagine their lives without; important because it has the potential to inspire so many more who are yet to discover its beauty, joys and solace. Perhaps it is also important because if you don't know classical music, but think the piano rather than say, opera or chamber music is a good way to start your journey, you are probably right and these discs will be the best guide you are likely to find.

Broadcast on TV and radio in over 40 countries around the world, the New Year's Concert is undoubtedly one of the biggest classical music events in the world. Now, thanks to DVD, you can enjoy this wonderful spectacle whenever you wish. Relive the wonderful melodies and delightful atmosphere as Vienna celebrates the ringing in of another year as only they can! The concert includes not only favourite orchestral items from the Strauss family played by one of the world's greatest orchestras, but also winningly beautiful ballet performances, too.

For 2005 the Wiener Philharmoniker invited Lorin Maazel to be their conductor, and Maestro Maazel had more than one reason to celebrate: on 6 March he celebrates his 75th birthday, and this concert was also a silver jubilee for him, for it's is 25 years since he was first invited to direct the orchestra at this event.

Thanks to the varied output of the many members of the Strauss family and associates, there were again no fewer than five pieces that received their New Year's Concert premières: Indigo-March and Haute volée-Polka by Johann Strauss, a waltz called Lustschwärmer and the quick Polka Winterlust by Joseph Strauss, as well as the Polka francaise Auf Wiener Art by Joseph Hellmesberger, jr.

For the ballet scenes, Vladimir Malakov, director of the Berlin State Opera Ballet, brought along his beautiful young soloist Polina Semionova - gold medal winner of two Moscow Ballet Competitions and the "rising star" of the classical ballet world. It was the first time she had performed in Austria. Vladimir Malakov was not only the choreographer but also joined Polina for Ein Herz, ein Sinn as her partner. Another highlight for the DVD was be the participation of the Italian soloist Giuseppe Picone.

In 2003 Bryn Terfel's Favourites album (474 4382) had an amazing success - with more than half a million copies sold worldwide.

His first set of little-known English songs The Vagabond (445 9462) was released in 1995 to the highest critical acclaim and went on to become a huge commercial success, too. It also received a Gramophone Award, an Edison Award and the Prix Caecilia.

Silent Noon is Bryn's long-awaited return to this repertoire which represents the heyday of song in the early 20th century. This disc features music by some of the greatest composers in the English language such as Vaughan Williams, Parry, Stanford and Quilter. And there is little doubt that Bryn is the most gifted interpreter of their music.

Thanks to his rich, warm voice and an ability to recreate a song and bring its sentiments to life, Bryn makes this repertoire completely his own. Each of these songs demands great communicative power with a wide range from humour to sweet elegy. Bryn is able to capture unerringly the sense of each piece and conveys this to the listener. Indeed, Bryn's wonderful diction and presence makes you feel as if he were in the room with you! With such a wonderful advocate, this music that is still too little known becomes fully worthy of comparison with the finest French melodies and German lieder.

In 2004 Magdalena Kozená has been going from strength to strength and she has just been voted Artist of the Year by the readers of Gramophone for both the song album and her French Arias recital disc with Marc Minkowski, both on Deutsche Grammophon.

Lamento is the perfect disc to introduce Magdalena to a wider audience - it is easily approachable and will appeal strongly to music lovers of all kinds.

The program has been selected and compiled by Reinhard Goebel and it is he and his ensemble Musica Antiqua Köln who offer the finest accompaniment one could wish for. Lamento is a stunning collection of rarely-heard music by the Bach family

Magdalena Kozená brings all this to life with her amazing voice and thoughtful interpretation. This is a disc that won't leave any listener untouched!

The title track by Johann Christoph Bach is an amazing discovery; dark, brooding, and full of grief, this music transcends its time, reaching the heart with the deepest human emotions

Johann Sebastian Bach's famous cantata 'Vergnügte Ruh' (Contented Rest) creates a beautiful counterpoint to this with its softness and floating melodies. It has been a favourite with Australian audiences for a long time.

'Magdalena Kozená has the looks to turn heads and a voice that has already melted some notably stony hearts. . . she will be one of the class vocal acts of the early 21st century.' The Times (London) 2004

'Not content with enjoying a reputation as one of the world's most sought-after mezzos, Magdalena Kozená is also carving a niche as a proselytiser of unfamiliar repertoire.' Evening Standard (London), 2004

Canadian singer/composer Loreena McKennitt is self-managed, self-produced, and the head of her own internationally successful record label, Quinlan Road. In a recording career spanning nearly two decades, McKennitt's 'eclectic Celtic' music has won critical acclaim and multiple sales awards in North and South America, Europe and Australasia. She has enjoyed GOLD and PLATINUM sales of her albums in Australia!

Born in the province of Manitoba, Canada, Loreena moved to Stratford, Ontario, Canada in 1981, where she still resides. She has acted and sung in, and composed music for, Stratford Festival of Canada productions ranging from The Tempest (1982) to The Merchant Of Venice (2001).

Her recording career began in 1985 with the album Elemental. In the fledgling years of her label Quinlan Road, Loreena ran its operations from her kitchen table, selling recordings by mail order and producing her own concert tours across the country.

For a limited time only, the CD will be packaged with a DVD - unique, as a Loreena DVD has never before been available, so her fans will lap up this one! The DVD has four tracks:

1. No Journey's End: a documentary in which Loreena explores the diverse influences behind her music.

2. The Bonny Swans : a music video from The Mask and the Mirror

3. The Mummers' Dance: one of her most famous tracks, this is a music video from The Book of Secrets

4. Explore the music of Loreena McKennitt - an interactive discography

From an Amazon.com review of The Visit:

Mixing a variety of styles with a Celtic base, this was McKennitt's breakthrough album and remains one of her most musically interesting. 'All Souls Night' begins the album, with dance-like rhythms and McKennitt's wonderful voice singing about the Celtic New Year. Other features include a musical setting of Tennyson's 'Lady of Shalott', which, while not as sophisticated as Noyes' 'The Highwayman' on The Book of Secrets is an enchanting listen. There's also an interesting rendition of 'Greensleeves' and the Spanish-flavored 'Tango to Evora', as well as the haunting 'Courtyard Lullaby' and the wistful 'The Old Ways'. A setting of words from Shakespeare's Cymbeline closes the album, which focuses thematically on life, death, and the borders between them. - Genevieve Williams

From an Amazon.com review of The Book of Secrets:

McKennitt's recordings always have the quality of a spiritual sojourn; her songs are those of a seeker, whether she's setting Yeats, Scripture, or her own words to her compositions. It's this that attracts people to her music, and The Book of Secrets is no exception, whether it's the lazy rhythms of 'Marco Polo,' the sober joy of 'The Mummers' Dance,' the poignancy of 'Skellig' or 'Dante's Prayer,' or the drama of Alfred Noyes' 'The Highwayman.' 'The Highwayman' is a particularly strong effort, especially in comparison to her earlier setting of 'The Lady of Shalott'; McKennitt has become much more skilled at musical narrative. This is music that can be enjoyed on many levels, from McKennitt's growing skill as a composer to the deeper questions posed by her lyrics. - Genevieve Williams

EDWARDS: Concerto for Oboe and Orchestra in a single movement
EDWARDS: Yanada
EDWARDS: Ulpirra

The divine Diana Doherty plays Ross Edwards' mesmerising Oboe Concerto on this Australia's first classical CD single! The music of Ross Edwards is haunting and evocative, and through this specially priced disc is destined to reach a wide and appreciative audience.

Composed especially for Diana Doherty, Ross Edwards has sought, in his Oboe Concerto, to imbue the traditional concerto with elements of theatre, ritual and dance, whilst preserving its concert hall function as an accompanied soloistic display. As we have come to expect from this composer, the texture is dominated by an almost kaleidoscopic interplay of material gleaned from the natural environment and diverse cultural sources, whose symbolic meaning remains ultimately and tantalisingly elusive.

Also on this special classical CD single are two other works by Ross Edwards playing by Diana Doherty - Ulpirra and Yanada
