AR Rahman has been composing music for Indian cinema for many years and is known as the John Williams of the Indian film industry - more recently he collaborated with Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber on Bombay Dreams. The UCJ soundtrack features their large-scale combined efforts for this powerful, Oscar-tipped film.

Stunning world-music influenced original soundtrack album to one of the most anticipated movies of the year!

The Kite Runner is based on the bestselling first novel by Afghan-American writer Khaled Hosseini and is directed by Marc Forster, who did Monster’s Ball and Finding Neverland among others.

The original soundtrack was written by Spanish composer Alberto Iglesias. This multi-award winning composer has received rave acclaim particularly for his previous soundtracks, including the best-selling Talk to Her, and The Constant Gardener which received an Oscar nomination for best original score in 2005. Iglesias is particularly well known for his work on the movies of Pedro Almodóvar.

Besides the original orchestral music by Alberto Iglesias the soundtrack album contains original songs by Afghan-Arabian singers as they are mentioned in the novel and featured in the movie - these include songs by legendary 70ies Afghan singer Ahmad Zahir, the world renowned british singer of iranian-azerbaijanian background Sami Yusuf who sold millions of albums worldwide (and was also a member of the group Outlandish), and other well respected world music stars.

With this unique insight into Afghan history and culture the novel obviously strikes the nerve of time - released in 2003 The Kite Runner has quickly become an international bestseller with now over 8 million copies in print, released in about 40 countries.

The Kite Runner is a haunting story about friendship and betrayal against the backdrop of recent historic events in Afghanistan – a country the world has looked at like few others over the last 6 years, while there is so little common knowledge about its history and cultural heritage before the time it was shattered by war. It tells the story of Amir’s and his best friend Hassan’s childhood in Kabul, in pre-war Afghanistan of the 70s. When the Soviets march into Afghanistan and therewith start the series of wars that last until today, Amir flees to the USA while Hassan stays back. Many years later Amir is summoned back to his hometown Kabul, now controlled by the Taliban, to deliver one last proof of friendship to Hassan.

A powerful movie that has everything to become a big success with critics and public alike - the perfect ground to make the compellingly beautiful soundtrack album of Alberto Iglesias one of your bestselling soundtrack albums of the year.

‘One of my greatest joys is to watch a composer spread his wings, and create the most affecting moments in film. Alberto Iglesias score for the Kite Runner is a continuous movement within the story telling, never overlapping itself. Nothing is ever ended or dismissed, and nothing is ever begun and finished. His score is like a wheel created by senses, where the senses are set whirling into the infinity of space. It is timeless, spaceless and moving.’ Marc Forster
