Here we present 11 of the first albums recorded by the original Swingle Singers in one low price boxed set!

The Swingle Singers is an a cappella group, now based in London, made up of eight young singers who continue a fine singing tradition that was started over forty years ago.

The original group was French, with the exception of  founder Ward Swingle. Ward, who was born and grew up in Mobile, Alabama, was living and studying in France when he formed the group with fellow session singers.

“The Swingle Singers began as a vocal exercise by a group of freelance session singers working in Paris in the early sixties. Most of our studio singing was limited to background vocals - oo's and ah's behind people like Charles Asnavour and Edith Piaf.

I got out Bach's "Well-Tempered Clavier" and we began reading through the preludes and fugues just to see if they were singable. We soon found, like many before us, that we were swinging Bach's music quite naturally. Since there were no words, we improvised a kind of scat singing a la Louis Armstrong, which we later reduced to simple doo's and boo's, dah's and bah's so as not to get in the way of Bach's counterpoint. We took advantage of two characteristics common to both jazz and baroque music: rhythm and improvisation. Jazz and baroque styles both require a good steady tempo, and most of the great baroque composers were organists who considered improvisation as part of their musical baggage - just as a jazz musician does today.

We continued rehearsing in our off time for most of that year (1962), then approached Philips about making a recording. When the recording came out in the States (in 1963), there were a few disk-jockeys who like it and who spread the word. It began climbing the charts, eventually making the top 10, then staying in the top 100 for almost a year and a half. That first recording, and the two that followed it, won Grammies for "Best Performance by a Chorus". The first "Bach's Greatest Hits" (Jazz Sébastian Bach in France), also won a Grammy for "Best New Artist". (The other albums were Going Baroque and Swinging Mozart or Anyone for Mozart in the US)

Swingle-singing is best described as the use of the voice as an instrument in a fusion of jazz and classical styles. In a sense, one leads to the other.

A good part of the next 10 years was spent touring with the Swingle Singers. Between tours we recorded 12 albums, moving chronologically from Bach and Handel to Telemann, Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin and some early 20th Century Spanish composers. In between, there was a Christmas album and one with the Modern Jazz Quartet. They were all done in our traditional jazz-classic mode: scatting to a light rhythmic background.

In 1973, for reasons both personal and professional, plus a feeling of une certaine usure (as we used to say in Alabama), we decided to disband. During those ten years there were very few changes in personnel. In fact, four of the singers were in the group from the beginning to the end. It was probably time to stop, but I think the singers will agree when I say that we produced some fine performances, made some excellent recordings, and - in spite of the ups and downs of touring - had some great times together.”

Stunning world-music influenced original soundtrack album to one of the most anticipated movies of the year!

The Kite Runner is based on the bestselling first novel by Afghan-American writer Khaled Hosseini and is directed by Marc Forster, who did Monster’s Ball and Finding Neverland among others.

The original soundtrack was written by Spanish composer Alberto Iglesias. This multi-award winning composer has received rave acclaim particularly for his previous soundtracks, including the best-selling Talk to Her, and The Constant Gardener which received an Oscar nomination for best original score in 2005. Iglesias is particularly well known for his work on the movies of Pedro Almodóvar.

Besides the original orchestral music by Alberto Iglesias the soundtrack album contains original songs by Afghan-Arabian singers as they are mentioned in the novel and featured in the movie - these include songs by legendary 70ies Afghan singer Ahmad Zahir, the world renowned british singer of iranian-azerbaijanian background Sami Yusuf who sold millions of albums worldwide (and was also a member of the group Outlandish), and other well respected world music stars.

With this unique insight into Afghan history and culture the novel obviously strikes the nerve of time - released in 2003 The Kite Runner has quickly become an international bestseller with now over 8 million copies in print, released in about 40 countries.

The Kite Runner is a haunting story about friendship and betrayal against the backdrop of recent historic events in Afghanistan – a country the world has looked at like few others over the last 6 years, while there is so little common knowledge about its history and cultural heritage before the time it was shattered by war. It tells the story of Amir’s and his best friend Hassan’s childhood in Kabul, in pre-war Afghanistan of the 70s. When the Soviets march into Afghanistan and therewith start the series of wars that last until today, Amir flees to the USA while Hassan stays back. Many years later Amir is summoned back to his hometown Kabul, now controlled by the Taliban, to deliver one last proof of friendship to Hassan.

A powerful movie that has everything to become a big success with critics and public alike - the perfect ground to make the compellingly beautiful soundtrack album of Alberto Iglesias one of your bestselling soundtrack albums of the year.

‘One of my greatest joys is to watch a composer spread his wings, and create the most affecting moments in film. Alberto Iglesias score for the Kite Runner is a continuous movement within the story telling, never overlapping itself. Nothing is ever ended or dismissed, and nothing is ever begun and finished. His score is like a wheel created by senses, where the senses are set whirling into the infinity of space. It is timeless, spaceless and moving.’ Marc Forster
