TRACK LISTING Disappear The Gabe Dixon Band's new, self-titled album is in fact the group's third release, following the 2002 album On a Rolling Ball and the 2005 EP Live at World Café, but there's good reason the writer/singer/pianist considers it GDB's debut. Formed nine years ago by Dixon - then a classical piano major at the University of Miami - and his two college roommates, bassist Winston Harrison and drummer Jano Rix, the group added a sax player and spent several years specializing in jazz-inflected, heavily improvised excursions, showcasing the virtuosity of the players. |

fit THE NEW CD/DVD FROM THE MEMBERS OF THE ALISTER SPENCE TRIO Alister Spence -- piano This is the fourth release for this internationally acclaimed group, and once again they are delving deeper into their captivating and highly original musical world. fit sees the launch of a new project that blends (or ‘fits’) texture, soundscape, free improvisation and editing, while still delivering the strong melody and seemingly effortless interplay that are hallmarks of this longstanding collaboration. The CD is accompanied by a DVD, featuring the work of film artist Louise Curham, set to the band’s music. Louise is at the forefront of Australian moving--image art. She is highly regarded in the experimental film world for her work using "obsolete media". Her hand--worked Super 8 films reinvent the home--movie medium of years gone by, through colour, texture and abstracted image. fit is another big step forward for the trio, and a worthy successor to their ARIA--finalist CDs Flux (2003) and Mercury (2007). It is no surprise that they have attracted interest overseas. In 2006 the band played UK and Canada, including the Vancouver and Montreal International Jazz festivals. In 2008 they performed at the prestigious Tokyo Jazz Festival. In June the trio was chosen by Brian Eno, along with The Necks and Pivot, to play at the Luminous Festival at the Sydney Opera House. Baby I’m A Fool Amazing though it is, the story of how Melody Gardot overcame the effects of a near-fatal accident to become one of the vocal sensations of 2008 is not the most extraordinary thing about the 23-year-old Philadelphia singer-songwriter. It is simply that here is a voice in a million; one that touches the soul. Melody’s debut album ‘Worrisome Heart’ introduced, in The Sunday Times’ words: “a remarkable talent by any measure”, with songs of quiet, wistful poetry in arrangements that “ooze after-hours sophistication”.
