Emma Matthews’ first solo album in a new contract with Universal Music Australia (Deutsche Grammophon) / ABC Classics

“Emma Matthews is without doubt the hottest opera star in Australia” Opera Now
“A dazzling artist” The Australian
“A national treasure” Richard Mills

Emma Matthews is one of the brightest stars in the antipodean operatic skies. Her voice is pure yet rich, capable of dazzling vocal fireworks but equally able to express the subtlest of moods. In this her debut release on Deutsche Grammophon/ABC Classics, she brings the thrilling beauty of her tone to jewels from French and Italian operatic repertoire, as well as music of the 20th and 21st centuries by Bernstein, and Australian composers Richard Mills and Calvin Bowman.

Equally at home with opera and concert repertoire, Emma appears regularly with all the major Australian orchestras and opera companies, as well as at major festivals. She is the recipient of Green Room, Mo and Helpmann Awards.

Her concert performance highlights include her appearance as Special Guest in two Gala Concerts with José Carreras. In 2010 Emma Matthews will make her debut at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in the title role of Janácek’s The Cunning Little Vixen to be conducted by Sir Charles Mackerras and her concert debut with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte-Carlo in Mahler’s Fourth Symphony. Later that year she will appear for the first time with Vladimir Ashkenazy, who conducts a performance of the Mahler with the Sydney Symphony.

But Emma’s versatility including roles in Berg’s Lulu and Richard Mills’ Batavia and The Love of the Nightingale. The role of the Nightingale in the latter was conceived for Emma and closes this CD, her first in an exclusive solo signing to Universal Music Australia (Deutsche Grammophon) and ABC Classics. This will be the first time an Australian artist makes a solo record on the Deutsche Grammophon label, widely considered to be the world’s most prestigious classical record label.

Recorded in September 2008 in Monte Carlo, the album highlights Romantic opera heroines for which Emma has received glowing praise. Included are key moments from some of these operas – the ‘Doll Song’ from Les Contes d’Hoffmann, the ‘Bell Song’ from Lakmé, great scenes from Lucia di Lammermoor and Hamlet, as well as fearless and thrilling coloratura moments in the Proch Theme and Variations and Bernstein’s ‘Glitter and be gay’. There are two world premieres on the disc – the Nightingale’s Song from the close of Richard Mills’ The Love of the Nightingale and Calvin Bowman’s song Now touch the air softly.

Conducting the Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte-Carlo is Australian-born, UK-based Brad Cohen, who graduated from St. John’s College, Oxford, before studying with Sergiu Celibidache and Leonard Bernstein.

Emma takes to the stage in Bellini's The Capulets and the Montagues for Opera Australia from August 11 at the Sydney Opera House. This hard-hitting tragedy about Shakespeare's star-cross'd lovers will showcase Emma's vocal virtuosity when she sings the role of Giulietta for the first time.

Rosario La Spina’s first solo album in a new signing to Universal Music Australia (Decca) / ABC Classics

“The Australian Pavarotti. A voice that melts your heart, a voice of gold; easy, warm and joyous... just makes you glow” Stuart Maunder (Opera Director)

“[a] beautifully, fluid tenor” Theatre Australia
“His voice is bright, powerful, and warmly lyrical, with thrilling, full top notes…” Crosscut
“La Spina reaches great heights” Courier Mail
“[a] rich tenor voice bursting with youthful ardour” The Opera Critic

Widely considered the leading heroic tenor performing in Australia today, Brisbane-born Rosario La Spina is of Sicilian descent. He trained at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, continuing his studies at the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester under Joseph Ward. During this period, he made guest appearances in Lucia di Lammermoor at the Bern Stadttheater and as a soloist in operatic galas. Having gained first prize in the tenor competition held by L'Accademia della Scala in 2000, Rosario embarked on the two-year Young Singers’ Course at La Scala, Milan, where he studied with Luciana Serra and Leyla Gencer. This culminated in his La Scala debut in Samson and Delilah, where he appeared alongside Plácido Domingo and Olga Borodina. In 2002, Rosario won first prize in the Mario Del Monaco International Opera Competition and made his principal role debut at La Scala in Verdi’s Oberto, reprising the role in Genoa.

2003 saw his debut at the Verdi Festival at the Teatro Regio di Parma in I Lombardi. He also performed Alfredo (La Traviata) in Modena and Luigi (Il Tabarro) in Osaka, Japan and in 2007 he made his US debut as Rodolfo (La bohème) for Seattle Opera.

Blessed with a voice of enormous power and beauty, he made his Opera Australia debut in 2005 as Cavaradossi (Tosca) and has since appeared in La Traviata, Madama Butterfly, Rusalka, Turandot and Les Contes d’Hoffmann.

This self-titled album is his debut solo recording under a new exclusive contract with Universal Music Australia (Decca) and ABC Classics. Highlighting six of the great heroic roles of the tenor repertoire – Calaf (Turandot), the Duke of Mantua (Rigoletto), Canio (Pagliacci), Pinkerton (Madama Butterfly), Radamès (Aida) and Oronte (I Lombardi), the CD also weaves in a host of Neapolitan songs, as much the province of the great tenors as the operatic roles they sang. Many of the arrangements for these songs are by the conductor on this recording, Richard Mills.

One of Australia’s most sought after musicians, Richard Mills has pursued a diverse career as composer, conductor and artistic director, which has seen him work with almost all of the nation’s music organisations. He has held the post of Artistic Director of the West Australian Opera since 1997 and was Musica Viva’s Featured Composer in 2008. His operas have been produced by opera companies and festivals across Australia and have also received some of Australia’s most prestigious awards. He has recorded extensively for ABC Classics and his unrivalled ear for sonority also marks him out as one of the country’s finest orchestrators.
