TRACK LISTING Al maestro con nostalgia The historic, once-in-a-lifetime summit meeting of the legendary ‘maestros’ of tango, reunited in Buenos Aires by producer-composer Gustavo Santaolalla. Café de los Maestros is the most ambitious project ever undertaken involving tango repertoire. Legendary artists including Aníbal Arias, Leopoldo Federico, Oscar Ferrari, Carlos García, Juan Carlos Godoy, José Libertella, Virginia Luque, Osvaldo Montes, Alberto Podestá, Lágrima Ríos, and Horacio Salgán present all-new recordings of the greatest songs in tango history. Think of this as the Buena Vista Social Club for tango. A feature film by Miguel Kohan about Café de los Maestros (filmed at a live event in Téatro Colon, Buenos Aires in 2006 and premiered at the Berlin Film Festival 2008) is currently in preparation for a 2008 release. We will keep you informed about release dates. In this state-of-the-art recording Café de los Maestros displays a wide range of different tango styles: from traditional to milongas and creole waltzes; from purely orchestral numbers to vocal pieces – all in the authentic style of the old maestros! An unprecedented homage to tango! At the 2006 Latin Grammy® award ceremony, the double album (already released in Argentina) received two of the coveted trophies in the categories ‘Best Tango Album’ and ‘Best Packaging/Artwork’. We are releasing the set in a 2-CD deluxe edition (special capbox, 56-page hardcover booklet in Spanish and English - similar in all respects to the original release in Argentina) and a regular version in a multipack.

JUAN DIEGO FLÓREZ | Bel Canto Spectacular (Limited Edition)
WATCH EPK
WATCH DONIZETTI CLIP
ARTISTS Juan Diego Flórez, tenor
TRACK LISTING DONIZETTI: Amici miei, che allegro giorno (La figlia del reggimento)
‘… King of the Rossini tenors, King of the Donizetti tenors, King of the Bellini tenors’ The New York Sun This recording features Juan Diego Flórez singing popular bel canto arias & duets with world stars such as Anna Netrebko and Plácido Domingo (tbc). The King of high Ds demonstrates yet again that he is THE Belcanto singer of his generation. Extract from the Bel canto CD booklet text: Fortunately for us, bel canto flourishes onstage today thanks in no small part to Juan Diego Flórez. For the past decade the Peruvian tenor has earned ecstatic critical and public response internationally for a technical prowess and an authoritative style that must surely equal what the public would have heard from the greatest tenors more than 150 years ago. Flórez’s exhilarating vocalism, matched by a magnetic stage presence, has prompted major opera companies to revive many rare works especially for him. An exclusive Decca artist, Flórez has reached a point in his career where he can invite eminent colleagues to record with him. This type of programme is fairly common in popular music, but seldom, if ever, with opera stars of similar magnitude. ‘I decided who I wanted to invite — they’re all friends of mine, and I’ve performed with all of them. I called them up and tried to persuade them. It wasn’t easy to work with everyone’s schedule, and I was lucky that they all could do it!’ This ‘Flórez and Friends’ programme of bel canto excerpts gives further proof of Flórez’s supremacy in this repertoire. |

ROLANDO VILLAZÓN | Cielo e Mar – Limited Hardcover
Rolando Villaznó, tenor
TRACK LISTING PONCHIELLI: Cielo e mar! (La Gioconda) Exuberant and charismatic, Rolando Villazón is the tenor of today. Here he releases his first solo album on Deutsche Grammophon. The soaring title track from Ponchielli’s La Gioconda inspired Villazón to become a singer. Here it is the starting point for an intriguing album which moves far beyond the usual ‘greatest tenor hits’. Less familiar masterpieces by Boito, Cilea and Verdi feature alongside little-known Donizetti arias and rarities by Gomes, Mercadante and Pietri. The album is Villazón’s personal homage to his illustrious predecessors in the lyric-dramatic repertoire – great tenors such as Bergonzi, Caruso and Domingo. Cielo e mar offers something special for connoisseurs of opera, Villazón’s many fans and mainstream listeners who will be gripped by the beauty of both his voice and the music. LIMITED EDITION: This limited edition of Cielo e mar features a hard cover booklet with 68 pages including the original recording (1 CD) in a glued wallet at the end. |

The production, commissioned by the Aix-en-Provence Festival, has been widely hailed as one of the operatic highlights of the new millennium. ‘A momentous experience’ is how The Guardian describes it. ‘Harrowing and unforgettable; one of the great Janá?ek interpretations of our time.’ Boulez’s contribution to the production has been equally highly praised: ‘With the Mahler Chamber Orchestra in the pit, Boulez unleashes rending dissonances that fill the air with pain and compassion’, wrote Tim Ashley in The Guardian. |

PIERGIORGIO MORANDI | PIZZETTI: Murder in the Cathedral
Ruggero Raimondi | Archbishop Thomas Becket
TRACK LISTING PIZZETTI: Murder in the Cathedral (Asssassinio nella Cattedrale) First-ever film recording of Pizzetti’s operatic version of TS Eliot’s play, ‘Murder in the Cathedral’, telling the story of Thomas Becket’s murder by the knights of Henry II. The only large-scale work to have survived by Pizzetti, this piece of sacred drama is a rare curiosity telling the black and gory tale of the murder of Thomas Becket. Ildebrando Pizzetti (1880-1968) was a composer writing in a largely parlando manner in a mix of Renaissance models, Debussy, and such contemporary European composers as Honegger and Hindemith. This is his only well-known work, premiered at La Scala in 1958. There is one CD recording, from Karajan in 1960, with Hans Hotter on DG. A production of UNITEL and Fondazione Lirico Sinfonica Petruzzelli e Teatri di Bari |

HERBERT VON KARAJAN | BEETHOVEN: Fidelio
ARTISTS Christa Ludwig | Leonore
TRACK LISTING BEETHOVEN: Fidelio ‘An intense, exciting night at the opera, tightly controlled and successfully brought off by Karajan … It’s fascinating to share the experience of such live recordings.’ Hermes Opera Lexicon Never before released (we do not acknowledge pirate productions), recorded at a single evening's performance (25 May 1962), this Fidelio, under the baton of Herbert von Karajan (who was also responsible for the acclaimed stage production), is remarkable for its spontaneity and sense of theatrical presence. A risk-taking, highly charged account, it also records the successful débuts of Christa Ludwig (Leonore), Gundula Janowitz (Marzelline), and Walter Berry (Pizarro) in their respective roles. It's an exceptional contribution to the 100th-anniversary celebration of Karajan's birth. The multipack packaging with three-language libretto and newly commissioned article by Gottfried Kraus includes dramatic photos from the original production. The release is part of the ‘Wiener Staatsoper LIVE’ series. Richard Strauss's Die Frau ohne Schatten from Vienna (11 June 1964; 457 678-2) will be restored to the catalogue at the same time as this Fidelio. |

TRACK LISTING HILLBORG: ... lontana in sonno ...** Anne Sofie presents a collection of emotional and evocative orchestral songs, which have been composed by Gefors and Hillborg specifically for her. I wanted to do something for its contemporary vocal music, which is ripe for discovery.’ Here are astonishingly beautiful songs about love and death by modern Swedish masters, including two cycles composed for Anne Sofie von Otter. London’s Guardian has praised her Swedish programmes, being sung ‘with her usual matchless intelligence.’ This fascinating collection will be of great interest to not only this artist’s many fans, but to all lovers of song. |

PIERRE-LAURENT AIMARD | Hommage à Messiaen
Album Website:
ARTISTS Pierre-Laurent Aimard, piano
TRACK LISTING MESSIAEN: 8 Préludes Pierre-Laurent Aimard celebrates the Messiaen Centenary Pierre-Laurent Aimard’s tribute to Olivier Messiaen coincides with the 100th anniversary of the composer’s birth on 10 December 2008 - A highlight of the Messiaen year. Aimard has a strong personal connection to Messiaen: he studied piano with the composer’s wife Yvonne Loriod from the age of twelve and won the Messiaen Competition in 1973. He has been a champion of Messiaen’s music throughout his career, one of the few pianists to keep this repertoire alive in the concert hall and bring new admirers to it. For this anniversary album, Aimard has selected the early 8 Préludes (1928–29), the tense Quatre Études de rythme (1949–50) and excerpts from the cycle Catalogue d’oiseaux (1956–58), showcasing the broad spectrum of Messiaen’s piano works. Aimard is widely acknowledged as being the preeminent interpreter of contemporary music with links to many of the greatest masters of our age, among them Boulez, Carter and Ligeti. His readings have indisputable authority because of his personal association with the composer. |
