Ella and Louis. No last names are necessary, and no explanation for why this was a musical match made in heaven. There’s been nothing like it in vocal jazz since these memorable mid-1950s Verve recordings which showcased Ella’s plush voice and Louis’ deep rumble. Satin meets sandpaper. It was the perfect chemistry. Now collected together are their complete records, Ella and Louis and Ella and Louis Again, plus two duets from Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess and their 1950 classic, Dream A Little Dream Of Me. Nearly two hours and forty minutes of pure jazz heaven on one double album.

In 1977--at a time when most young jazz musicians were busy trying to emulate John Coltrane's "sheets of sound" or Miles Davis's fusion experiments--tenor saxophonist Scott Hamilton emerged with his debut Concord Jazz release, launching the revival of swinging, mainstream jazz.   While echoing the influences of swing-era masters such as Ben Webster, Lester Young and Coleman Hawkins, as a young man in his early twenties, Scott Hamilton had already distilled these appealing essences through his own original voice.   Concord Jazz is proud to make Hamilton's first two Concord recordings--' A Good Wind Who Is Blowing Us No Ill' and ' Scott Hamilton 2' -- available in this special 2-CD set.

Etta James: Jazz reflects some great singing - and the urban lush life aesthetic prominent in the era these were originally released. These are some of the songs that would carry Dinah Washington's torch up high as well as inspire ballad divas Esther Phillips and Aretha Franklin. These are pop standards couched in sophisticated, jazz-like orchestral arrangements (here mostly by the great Riley C. Hampton), embellished by and grounded in soul-gospel-blues-R&B textures and attitudes - a precursor to the crossover dreams of Motown, Stax and, later, Philadelphia International.

In celebrating the life of the late James Brown, the world has focused on an icon; he was one of the most recognizable faces and voices of our age, the performer of all performers. Amidst the grandeur it's easy to overlook the fact that James Brown was always about music: Long before he was anointed Godfather Of Soul, his childhood nickname was "Music Box." Beyond his native rhythm and blues, Brown appreciated everything from country music to the Gospels he sang as a youngster. As a teenager he developed a fondness for standards - songs that crossed the boundary between "race" music and "pop" music. As an adult, he loved jazz.

"I like Ahmad Jamal, [Dave] Brubeck," Brown told Down Beat 's Ira Gitler in 1968. "But then, if I want to hear a cat drive I like Horace Silver, Jimmy Smith, [Brother Jack] McDuff, Jimmy McGriff; I like them because they're real soulful."

Over six decades of recording, Brown touched on jazz in a variety of projects - first, as an organist with his own hard swinging group; then a couple of vocal albums, one with a cocktail trio, another with Louis Bellson's big band. There's also JB's tribute to fellow King Records artist Little Willie John that fired up his jazz influences. Brown's own unit, arguably the most influential funk band ever, also introduced trumpeter Waymon Reed, trombonist Fred Wesley and saxophonists Alfred "Pee Wee" Ellis and Maceo Parker, all of whom accumulated enviable jazz credentials. (Parker's rousing performance on "There" is thought to be his first recorded solo.) And they've been a model for countless jazz-funk outfits.

This compilation derives from a wide array of sources yet holds together cohesively; it's a testament to the common thread in all of Brown's records. "I'm not an organ player, that's for sure," he once admitted. "I just try to play soul, that's about all I can do. But that's the way I express me." - Alan Leeds

Trumpeter and crooner Till Brönner was the most famous German jazz musician of his generation, updating traditional bebop sensibilities via elements of contemporary R&B and hip-hop.

Born in Viersen, Germany, on May 6, 1971, Brönner discovered the music of Charlie Parker at 13, and later studied jazz trumpet at the Hochschule für Musik Köln. After just three semesters, he turned professional as a member of pianist Horst Jankowski's RIAS-Tanzorchester.

In 1993 he cut his debut solo LP, Generations of Jazz, a traditional hard bop homage recorded with guests including bassist Ray Brown and drummer Jeff Hamilton. The album won a number of awards, among them the Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik and the Preis der Deutschen Plattenindustrie.

With his third release, 1996's German Songs, Brönner arranged classic German film themes for jazz quartet and classical orchestra, anticipating the creative detours of sessions to follow. 1998's Love heralded his first release for the venerable Verve imprint as well as his debut as a singer, and two years later he issued Chattin with Chet, a project that cemented his growing debt to the American cool jazz legend Chet Baker.

After scoring the acclaimed 2001 feature Jazz Seen, a documentary spotlighting the influential photographer William Claxton, Brönner resurfaced a year later with the ambitious Blue Eyed Soul, a collaboration with Japanese DJ Samon Kawamura and soul vocalist Mark Murphy that embraced electronica idioms to update the trumpeter's sound into the postmodern era.
