LEONARD BERNSTEIN | A Gift of Music
An intimate portrait of Leonard Bernstein as composer, conductor, performer and teacher, narrated by Lauren Bacall, this is a moving tribute to one of this century's musical giants with rare documentary footage and many musical highlights. A Gift of Music portrays the musical genius and extraordinary charisma of the man who devoted his whole life to communicating his unabashed joy of music to millions all over the world. The program reveals the rich gamut of Bernstein's character and achievements - as composer, conductor, performer, teacher and quintessential personality dedicated to breaking down personal and political barriers between people. The program is narrated by legendary screen star Lauren Bacall, but it also relies extensively on Bernstein's own words to provide the counterpoint to the abundant visual material. Highlights include excerpts of Bernstein conducting masterworks by Beethoven and Mahler, as well as of the maestro with the New York Philharmonic in Moscow in 1959 before an audience which included composer Dimitri Shostakovich. Special treat: the dashing 28-year-old maestro representing the U.S. at the 1947 Prague Spring Festival - possibly the earliest extant film of Leonard Bernstein. 'It takes a long, admiring look at [Bernstein´s] work, presented largely in his own words. In its bright, optimistic way it captures much of his dynamism and the special flavour of his personality.' Washington Post 'What comes through is his astonishing ability to succeed through means that might be interpreted as either brilliant or opportunistic - perhaps brilliantly optimistic.' The New York Times 'The Gift of Music is a gift of passionate, reverent biography. It's produced by Michael Bronson ... and narrated (quite nicely and enthusiastically) by Lauren Bacall, a long time Bernstein friend.' The New York Daily News |
