Crazy & exotic Songs in 1950s Bollywood

In order to attract the audience, a Bollywood film has to have several elements - a love story, a mystery, a dance routine...

During the 1950s and with the westernization of the Hindi film industry, more and more composers left the traditional classic Bollywood songs for more exotic ones. The fascination aspect of this music is the mix between the western, the Indian and the Bollywood influences. That's why you can sometimes find a mambo, a waltz, a swing or a yodel song or even a Hawaiian guitar solo in the middle of a track. (Let's not forget that the slide Hawaiian guitar came from India.)

At the end of the 1950s, more and more films had a nightclub scene with a vampy dance and a band. Cue: the bizarre Bollywood songs. Throughout the 1950s the biggest stars of Bollywood (Asha Bohsle, Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar) recorded bizarre songs created by the most talented composers (O.P. Nayyar, S.D. Burman).

One of the major figures in this genure was most certainly the talented Kishore Kumar. Actor, composer, singer - a great all-roudn artist. When he was a child, he sang along to the yodel records of his elder brother. no wonder the yodel was his speciality.

On the composer's side, S.D. Burman and O.P. Nayyar were both influenced greatly by western music. They paved the way for the next generation of composers such as R.D. Burman in the sixties.

This album aims to show that Bollywood music is not just a fixed genre. (Listen to the two versions of Eena Meena Deeka by Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhosle and you'll have an idea of the vitality of this style.) Hindi film music is a living style, taking its inspiration from every musical influence, and producing some of the most rocking and experimental grooves from that time.

Indian audiences expect more than just a movie and more than just a song - they need entertainment... a show in itself.

Duets are a part of every Bollywood movie. The standard Bollywood movie always includes several types of song and dance numbers - a love song, a dance or nightclub song, and at least one duet.

The duet is not as easy as it first looks - the playback singers must instill all the feelings and emotionso f the piece during the recording so that the actors can create their performances on screen while they lip-synch.

Lata Mangeshkar and Mukesh, Lat's sister Asha Bhosle with Kishore Kumar, Mohammed Rafi and Geeta Dutt - twenty magic moments through the Hindi films of the 1950s.

Some of them are rare, like tu Mera Chand sung by Suraiya and Shyam or Bachpan ke din by Lata Mangeshkar and Shamshad Begum, both composed by the great Naushad. Some others are just pure musical jewels. Ichak dana beechak dana by Lata Mangeshkar and Kukesh, recorded in 1955 for Raj Kapoor's Shree 420 or Sajan ki ho gayi gori sung by Geeta Dutt and Manna Dey in Bimal Roy's Devdas (which is the third adaptation based on Sharatchandra's literary masterpiece of the same name).

Some are key songs in some of the singers' careers such as one of Asha Bhosle's first hits Saathi haath Badhana which she sang with Mohamed Rafi, composer by O.P. Nayyar for B.R. Chopra's movie Naya Daur.

All those songs presented here are magical and unique moments in Bollywood history. This compilation is dedicated to all those great singers and composers who made it possible.

All of them were playback singers - pre-recording the songs for the film actors to lip-synch the lyrics. Few of them actually made an acting career but those that remained hidden behind the screen are now part of the Bollywood legend. Their names are Mukesh (aka The Man with the Golden Voice), Mohammed Rafi (aka The Voice of God), Talat Mahmood (aka The King of Ghazals), Kishore Kumar, Amir Khan, Hemant Kumar, Durjen Mukherjee, Manna Dey...
