One of the most talked about figures in jazz in the late 1930's & 1940's, CHARLIE BARNET was an uncompromising innovator who led "the blackest white band of them all." His was the only white band to break attendance records at Harlem's Appollo Theatre, & was one of the first white big-band leaders to feature African American stars - LENA HORNE, for one, got her first big break with Charlie's orchestra. In the late 50's, Charlie assembled a band of all stars to record his big hits in stereo for the audiophile Everest label. The resulting sessions produced two incredible LPs (CHEROKEE - 1958 & MORE - 1959). Now these two classic albums are available for the first time on one CD.

Perhaps the most popular bassist of the big-band era, Chubby Jackson started playing the bass in 1935 & worked with an enormous variety of dance band greats including Charlie Barnet & woody Herman for which he was known as the driving force behind the Thundering Herd - his energetic vocals as well as rock-steady bass contributed greatly to the popularity of the band's recordings. He was responsible for bringing be-bop jazz to schools all over the country & led the first American jazz band to tour Europe after WWII. He appeared on numerous movies & TV shows & performed & recorded with, among many others, WOODY HERMAN, DUKE ELLINGTON, CHARLIE BARNET, LIONEL HAMPTON, LOUIS ARMSTRONG, MILES DAVIS, STAN GETZ, ELLA FITZGERALD, DIZZY GILLESPIE, CHARLIE PARKER, BUDDY RICH, COLEMAN HAWKINS, BEN WEBSTER, RAYMOND SCOTT, GERRY MULLIGAN, ZOOT SIMS & RED NORVO.

This rare LP recorded for the Everest label in 1958, captures Chubby at the height of his powers at a session he often referred to as one of his most enjoyable recording dates, featuring Chubby as a leader assembling his favourite musicians from the great WOODY HERMAN bands he worked with including ERNIE ROYAL, AL COHN, BOB BROOKMEYER & DON LAMOND - expertly remastered & finally available on CD.

•  Rare 1958 recording featuring Chubby as a leader was hailed by audiophiles as the best balanced big band LP of the 50's .

The great Wild Bill Davis was, like Jimmy Smith, who cited his as a primary influence, both an innovator & a popularizer of that specific double keyboard tradition. One of the very first to play the organ as the instrument it is & not like a piano which most practitioners did before him, Davis was the first to establish the classic organ trio format with guitar & drums eventually adding a tenor sax later on occasionally. In the words of one of his peers, organ grinder Bill Doggett "We were all impressed by what Davis was doing. It was a whole new idea. People were shouting & stomping. They never heard anything like it before."

This long overdue collection exhibits what a master of dynamics he was with diminuendos that climb downward to a whisper followed by crescendos that swoop up to a scream which will take the top of your head off. He truly was an innovator when it comes to reissues of his discography but with this representative collection of his Everest output it may be safe to say Wild Bill Davis Rides Again or in his own words "One More Time!"

  • First time on CD - the long overdue debut of Wild Bill's output for the Everest label with selections from all 5 albums.
  • Accurate historical information included with complete session dates & musicians.

Originally a high-end classical record label, Period Records released an eclectic selection of jazz & blues LP's between 1954 & 1958 that have become highly prized in collector's circles. "Period's Jazz Digest" LP's were innovative, various artist compilations revealing a broad cross-section of the great variety of jazz styles represented in the label's catalogue. The "Period's Jazz Digest" LP's were released in two volumes in the late 1950's to critical acclaim, shortly before the label's demise.

This CD serves to illustrate the neglected "straight ahead" jazz & blues titles taken from the two Period Jazz Digest LP's, along with other tracks recorded for the Period label that didn't make it onto the original compilations. The resulting CD echoes the eclectic innovations of the original Period Jazz Digest LP's & hopefully offers a new insight to these great, neglected recordings available for the first time on CD.

  • Extremely rare tracks from the 1950's audiophile label available on CD for the first time.
  • Featuring the late jazz historian LEONARD FEATHER'S original LP liner notes.
