A classic DVD of Mozart's beloved comic opera conducted by one of the most acclaimed Mozart conductors of the 20th century, Karl Böhm.

Edita Gruberova's is an accomplished Mozartian and her crystal-clear top and sonic coloratura makes for a vivid Konstanze; indeed, Gramophone says she ' hasn't been bettered, in technical terms, by any of her rivals as Konstanze'. She is joined by an outstanding Francisco Araiza as Belmonte. Gramophone adds that, ' Talvela is a gloriously rotund, relishing Osmin, brandishing his faintly ludicrous trappings of power with vocal assurance and fruity tone'.

Filmed in 1980 at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, this DVD documents the acclaimed staging by August Everding.

GIORDANO: Andrea Chénier

Out of all Italian verismo operas, Umberto Giordano's Andrea Chénier is one of the few of lasting popularity that is still performed regularly on major opera stages worldwide.

This 1981 production features a stellar Plácido Domingo in the title role and a classic staging by Otto Schenk, making for one of the finest readings of the opera. Andrea Chénier was an overwhelming success when premiered at La Scala in 1896 and first performed in Vienna in 1926, returning to the stage whenever a truly great tenor was available to tackle the demanding title role.

R. STRAUSS: Der Rosenkavalier

Filmed in 1979, this delightful staging by Otto Schenk features outstanding singer-actresses Gwyneth Jones, Brigitte Fassbaender and Lucia Popp. The release on DVD of this version of Strauss' opera has been eagerly anticipated by opera lovers. It has been universally praised as both the best conducted and probably the best sung performance of the opera ever to be filmed.
