UCJ has signed hot new singer/songwriter Imelda May who got her first break as an unsigned artist on Jools Holland's summer tour.
Dublin–born Imelda, who fuses rockabilly, blues and jazz into jazz–a–billy, has since performed on Holland's BBC Radio 2 show as well as Later With Jools on which she performed Johnny Got A Boom Boom, one of the leading tracks on her new album Love Tattoo. Her performance got a strong audience reaction.
Tom Lewis signed Imelda for UCJ. He says: "Imelda made a fantastic and lasting impression on Later With Jools. People are still talking about it.
"I've known about her for a long time – in fact, she sang at my wedding! But, when she performed Johnny Got A Boom Boom on Later, it was immediately obvious that she'd arrived. We had to sign her as quickly as we could after that. Her TV performance definitely clinched the deal as far as I'm concerned. I'm really excited about her potential.
"Her sound is unique, she looks amazing, she is a brilliant song writer and she has an awesome voice. When she performs on stage, she is magnetic and has the ability to whip the crowd into a frenzy. She is 100% the real deal. She's a very strong individual and I think she has the potential to become a female icon. People can't help falling in love with Imelda."
Imelda May has now released her debut album Love Tattoo on Blue Thumb/UCJ, home to other rising stars Teddy Thompson and Beth Rowley. She will be touring the UK during February and March, concluding in Ireland at Dublin's Button Factory,
Imelda has already won an award: Best Female Newcomer of the Year for 2008 at the prestigious Irish World Newspaper Awards plus a nomination of Best Burlesque Singer 2007. She has also made her LA movie debut as the singing voice in the forthcoming American gangster move, Dark Streets.
So far in her career, Imelda has shared the stage with an impressive array of musical talent, including the late Kirsty MacColl, Alison Moyet, Dionne Warwick, Diana Ross, Van Morrison and Scissor Sisters.
