André Rieu achieved record status when he was declared the best-selling Universal artist in any genre in 2007.
Hot on the heels of his enormous success and in the lead up to the much-anticipated World Stadium Tour in November/December this year, where he will perform in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth, comes his most anticipated recording and his gift to all Australians.
Together with Brisbane soprano Mirusia, who now lives in Holland and is part of André’s entourage, his next release is an album called Waltzing Matilda. Given his deep and abiding love for Australia coupled with the fact that he is the undisputed modern “King of the Waltz”, this is a perfect offering. The album includes half a dozen Australian songs, sumptuously arranged for voice (Mirusia), solo violin (André), orchestra and choir – Botany Bay, Waltzing Matilda, I Still Call Australia Home, The Gum Tree, Tie Me Kangaroo Down…. André will be including these tracks on not only the Australian leg of his tour but also in concerts he is giving worldwide and they will form part of a DVD to be released in time with the tour.

Mike Oldfield has always been famed for his unconventional approach to music. Throughout his career he has consistently broken musical boundaries, and with Music of the Spheres he continues to do so. Taking influences from Holst and Rachmaninov as much as Steve Reich or William Orbit, this piece is classical in nature, but yet is also immediately identifiable as classic Mike Oldfield.

Using a full concert orchestra and choir, and with solo parts from Mike himself on guitar, legendary soprano Hayley Westenra and renowned pianist Lang Lang, this is a work with huge emotional and musical scope. And whilst the piece was entirely conceived, produced and written by Mike, in order to translate his ideas into traditional classical notation arranged for musicians to play, he turned to popular modern classical composer Karl Jenkins.

The title of the piece is a reference to something that Mike feels strongly: that all music should aim to represent the spiritual, or otherworldly elements of life: something beyond the mundane and everyday.

In this he has clearly succeeded. Music of the Spheres is by turns epic, tender, mournful and triumphant. It is the work of a composer who above all can make beautiful and substantial music, regardless of genre or instrumentation.

The trumpet phenomenon Chris Botti bridges musical genres in this beautiful album inspired by the romance of Italy, luxuriating in melody and mood, and including a specially written duet with star tenor Andrea Bocelli.

A musical phenomenon in the United States, Botti has demonstrated his ability to transcend the jazz world and reach out to a much wider adult audience. His solo recordings have sold over 2 million copies in the US alone, and have consistently appeared within the top 50 of the Billboard charts.

His new album, Italia, is a collection of songs and music inspired by the beauty and romance of Italy, drawing on sources from classical opera to the lush soundtracks of Ennio Morricone.

The album includes the title track ‘Italia’, a passionate duet with Andrea Bocelli, written by 14-time Grammy Award winner producer/songwriter David Foster.

Botti accompanies Dean Martin on a performance originally recorded in 1957, ‘I’ve Grown Accustomed To Her Face’. Botti recorded this track at Capitol Studios in the same room as Dean Martin recorded his vocals. There is also a duet with Paula Cole ‘The Very Thought Of You’. ‘Ave Maria’ includes a 60-piece choir. Finally, on ‘Nessun Dorma’ classical elements take over from the jazz, demonstrating the diversity of styles and textures Botti so cleverly utilises.

‘Italia is a more powerful work than its individual cuts allow: each song affects the next, creating a meditative symphony.’ The Boston Globe

‘It was Botti’s virtuosic trumpet work, his inventive melody-making, his engaging onstage presence... that ruled the evening.’ Los Angeles Times

‘No instrumental artist with jazz roots, Wynton Marsalis included, is hotter than Botti.’ Boston Herald

‘His playing carries all the hallmarks of a great tenor – a lightness of tone in the middle register, easy power on the high notes and rich warmth in the lower register.’ The Globe and Mail, Canada
