The catholics are one of Australia's most distinguished contemporary groups, and after 15 years on the scene, are virtually an institution in Australian music. Known for their infectious melding of jazz cred with exuberant dance rhythms of the world, they take a more atmospheric approach on Gondola, their fifth album, which looks more to contemporary European influences, without losing their trademark accessibility. Their leader, composer and bassist, Lloyd Swanton, is best known across Australia and internationally for his work with improvising legends The Necks, but he also appears on over 70 albums for artists including Vince Jones, Wendy Matthews, and boasts production and playing credits on numerous Bernie McGann ARIA Award-winning albums. With The catholics he assembled some of the best musicians in Australia from a wide spectrum of musical backgrounds to produce one of the freshest-sounding new acts in a long time. Throughout The catholics' beautifully crafted and instantly accessible pieces runs a strong, seductive dance strain found in the band's various African, Caribbean, Latin and Eastern influences. This 7-piece ensemble is one of Australia's most popular jazz acts and has performed across the country countless times to great response. They have won a Mo Award for Best Jazz Group, and three of their acclaimed albums have been nominated for ARIA Awards. The catholics have made big waves outside of their home country too, with releases of several of their albums in North America to critical acclaim. The European release of their album Simple earned them a nomination for the Deutsche Schallplattenkritik Award. Overseas performances have included tours of Canada, Europe, and concerts in Thailand as part of the King of Thailand's Silver Jubilee celebrations. By taking the catchiness of pop music, and combining it with indisputably authoritative jazz blowing and infectious dance rhythms of the world, The catholics are creating a rare thing indeed - a sound with an instant appeal, physical excitement, passion, and critical credibility. Says Swanton: "The bottom line for me is that people who come to see a catholics show can enjoy us intellectually or emotionally, or they can just get up and dance." On their fifth album Gondola however, The catholics take a more atmospheric approach which looks more to contemporary European influences, without losing their trademark accessibility. Swanton says: "although we're best known for our joyful groove stuff, this is actually an area that's always been present in the band's collective personality, and I decided it was high time to craft an entire album of pieces in that style. I think we've created a truly exquisite, pristine album, and it will turn a few heads among fans that weren't aware of this side of our personality. "Gondola had its genesis in an extended period of workshopping in St Scholastica's Chapel, Glebe, NSW. The acoustic in the chapel is stunningly beautiful. You can feel it through your whole body immediately on entering the space. Notes hang in the air like strands of spider webs. An acoustic like this profoundly affects the performance of music within it, and I think listeners will instantly hear the influence of this time on Gondola." Intriguingly combining traces of the ECM sound, Jon Hassell, Ry Cooder and others in a thoroughly unique way, Gondola shows that after fifteen years at it, The catholics are still pointing the way forward. |
