Così fan tutte, composed during in the winter 1789/90, centres on a wager that proves the dual inconstancy of two couples who had sworn eternal faithfulness. The work contains some of Mozart's loveliest arias and the largest number of ensembles of any of his operas. Nikolaus Harnoncourt leads Edita Gruberova (Fiordiligi) and the Wiener Philharmoniker in the Jean-Pierre Ponnelle staging of Mozart's most controversial work. Filmed in the stylized setting of a coastal Palladian villa in 1988, Ponnelle's production mirrors the musical and dramaturgical symmetry in Mozart's 2-act opera. Così fan tutte was the last film project of the internationally acclaimed director and stage designer Jean-Pierre Ponnelle for Unitel, who died later that year.

MOZART: Il rè pastore  

This is the first release of Mozart's operatic masterpiece on DVD!

A Major release for 'Mozart 2006', this performance features Sylvia McNair, Jerry Hadley and Sir Neville Marriner.

In a major operatic addition to Mozart's 250th Anniversary, this release sees the first availability of Mozart's early masterpiece, his opera seria, 'Il re pastore', on DVD. Its story, set in Classical antiquity, tells of the thwarted love of Aminta (the innocent 'shepherd king' of the title) for the well-born Elisa, and that of the nobleman Agenore for the deposed tyrant's daughter Tamiri. No less a figure than Alexander the Great resolves these conflicts of private passion and public status.

Sir Neville Marriner conducts a top international cast, including Sylvia McNair, Jerry Hadley and Iris Vermillion, in this 1989 staging from Salzburg's Landestheater.

The disc features both CD-quality stereo and a DTS 5.1 surround sound, and subtitles in English, French, German, Spanish and Chinese.

Extra features consist of a Mozart Picture Gallery and Mozart Chronology.

This release follows the three new Mozart DVD releases in January 2006, marking the forthcoming 250th anniversary of Mozart's birth - John Eliot Gardiner conducting the Requiem and C Minor Mass, a collection of Mozart's choral works, sung by the legendary Vienna Boys' Choir, and a dazzling performance of Mozart's last two symphonies, given by Riccardo Muti and the Vienna Philharmonic at a Salzburg Festival concert in 1991.
